"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/28/2007

Sunday's show started a bit late, as the UCONN Women's Hockey game lasted 'til a bit past 4PM. No matter, though, as we still squeezed in plenty of great Bluegrass. The new year has brought us lots of new music so far, and we featured a good bit of it from the likes of Nashville songwriter Jerry Salley, banjo player Daniel Grindstaff, a new gospel project from the Kenny & Amanda Smith Band, something from the Greencards, a song from the forthcoming solo project by Steve Gulley, a couple of tunes from the latest edition of Prime Cuts of Bluegrass, and a new CD tribute to the Country Gentlemen from their longest-tenured bass player, Bill Yates. We also inadvertently featured at least three tunes from the country music songbook of Carl Smith, but that's not such a bad thing, is it? There were a few requests, too: those are noted below in blue. Not sure who's in the Cafe next week -- Jim or I -- but we'll keep you posted, and hopefully, entertained with some great Bluegrass music.

Have a good week -

"Bluegrass Cafe" Play List 1/21/2007

We played a mix of very old Bluegrass music from some obscure labels and some very new music from today's stars of Bluegrass and also from artists on smaller independent or self-produced labels. We played several local and New England artists as well. We found there was some very good music out there that is not very well-known -- all you need to do is look for it. We will do our best to keep bringing you a good cross-section of Bluegrass every Sunday, so keep us tuned in to keep abreast of the full range of Bluegrass, including some rare items you will find nowhere else. Amy will be back next Sunday, 1/28/07.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 1/14/2007

Sunday's show featured some brand new music from a young fiddler from Maryland, Patrick McAvinue. He has a new solo project on Patuxent Music that features, in addition to Patrick's great fiddling, some pretty high-profile guests: Marshall Wilborn, Dudley Connell, David McLaughlin, Sammy Shelor, and Patrick's boss in Redline, Audie Blaylock. Great stuff. We also included a mini-salute to one of the country music greats, Hall of Famer Ray Price, who celebrated his 81st birthday on January 12th. No, Ray Price is definitely NOT a BG performer, but some of his great songs from the 1950s have been covered many times in the BG world by various performers, so it seems only fitting to pay tribute to him on a BG show.

We think this Sunday's show may be preempted for UCONN basketball, but Jim & Marti will join you for whatever portion of the BG Cafe that airs....

Acoustic Blue -- Saturday, January 20th

The January edition of the Country Corner Coffee House series will feature a Massachusetts band, Acoustic Blue. Showtime is 8PM. The Country Corner Coffee House (a/k/a Fellowship Hall at the South Hadley Falls Congregational Church) can be found at 11 North Main Street, South Hadley, MA. Call (413) 467-9394 for more information.

Steep Canyon Rangers -- Friday, January 19th

On Friday, January 19th, the 2006 IBMA "Emerging Artists of the Year" -- the Steep Canyon Rangers -- will be performing at the Iron Horse Music Hall, 20 Center Street, Northampton, MA. Showtime is 10PM. For what it's worth, I saw these guys at Andy Alexander's Pickin' In The Pasture festival last August, and they were terrific. They're not ultra-traditional, but they definitely can play that "hardcore" BG, if they're so inclined. If you'd like more information on their Iron Horse show, call (413)584-0610.

Bristol Boys -- Saturday, January 13th

The Bristol Boys are a relatively new (formed within the last year) trio of veteran CT musicians who get together from time-to-time to play country and Bluegrass music dating from the 1920s through the early 1950s. If you've been around the southern New England BG scene for awhile, no doubt, these guys look a bit familiar to you, as they've had years of playing experience with bands such as Charter Oak Bluegrass, Traver Hollow, and the Bear Bridge Band. For the record, the Bristol Boys are (L-R), Dave Orlomoski on guitar, Matt Nozzolio on Dobro, and Dave Aston on bass (and yes, the first Dave is Amy's brother). If you'd like to see this trio play and sing, join them this Saturday, January 13th at 9PM at Jitters Coffee House, 1273 Queen Street (Route 10), Southington, CT. For more information, call (860)747-1100.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Play List, 7 January 2007

Our first show of the year featured a live interview with David Davis of The Warrior River Boys. David disussed his influences, what has been happening with his band in recent years, and his new CD on Rebel, "Troubled Times." We also celebrated Earl Scruggs' 83rd birthday by playing several canons of the Bluegrass genre from Lester & Earl. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed serving it up.

Amy will be with you next week.

Another year -- another guest at this Sunday's BG Cafe!

Folks -

Just wanted to let you know that David Davis (of the Warrior River Boys) will be joining Jim via telephone on this Sunday's BG Cafe. At this point, I'm not sure of what time that interview will be happening, but you'll want to tune in for the whole show, I'm sure, beginning at 4PM EST. David Davis has long been a favorite of New England's ultra-traditional BG fans, and his very excellent and successful 2006 Rebel release, "Troubled Times" does not disappoint. Folks in New England will have a couple of opportunities to see David and the WRB in person in 2007. Here are just a couple of dates:

If you don't live in or near New England, click here for a more complete listing of WRB gigs.

Join David with Jim this Sunday, January 7th, won't you? I know I'll be listening....

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/31/2006

In the last BG Cafe for 2006, we included lots of new and/or reissued music released during the year (and a couple of tunes from projects that were received at the tail end of 2005, if you want to be technical). We've marked these "new" tunes on this list in red. We also played very brand-new music from the likes of the Bluegrass Gospel Project, Monroe Crossing, Dwight McCall, and a young guitar player named Mo Canada. In 2007, we look forward to playing lots more great BG music for you at WHUS -- thanks for supporting the show this year!

Happy New Year!
