"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/21/2010 Radiothon Week #2

Well...it's over. Hooray! Thanks so much to all of you who made a pledge to BG Cafe (and, of course to WHUS) over the course of the two weeks of Radiothon! It's always great to hear from listeners, and there's no other time of year where we really can get some sort of "snapshot" of where our listeners might be. This year, we heard from 60+ listeners who called from 7 states -- thanks! Our two-week show goal set by WHUS was $3,000 -- a pretty ambitious amount in what is still a pretty lousy economy. I'm delighted to tell you, though, that through your generosity, we not only MET that $3,000 goal but we even SURPASSED it by a little bit. Wow!

Jim and I thought we'd add a little more "fun" to Radiothon this year by offering a drawing at the end of our two weekends. The "Bluegrass Bonus Book Bonanza" allowed each person who made a pledge during the two weeks an equal chance in a drawing for a brand-new copy of the Ralph Stanley autobiography called
Man Of Constant Sorrow, as well as an autographed copy of the Tom T. Hall novel, What A Book! When it was all over, the winner turned out to be one of the biggest Stanley fans we know of in Connecticut -- none other than musician and promoter of the Firebox Sunday night Bluegrass shows, Nick Novia. Congratulations to him, and thanks again to all of you for your support!

Thanks, too, to all of the record labels and performers who donated CDs for us to use as premiums (or, "thank you gifts") during Radiothon. And thanks as well to our fine phone operators and helpers during Radiothon, including
Clyde Proch & Scott Farrar, Jim's wife, Marti, my mother, Eleanor and niece, Caitlyn, and Cathy & James Ward.

Jim will join you on the air next Sunday. It wouldn't surprise me if you hear LOTS of music and a lot less yapping. Join him!

Thanks again!

Amy

Radiothon & the "Bluegrass Bonus Book Bonanza"...

As we mentioned more than once during yesterday's Radiothon activities, each person who makes a pledge to support WHUS during the "Bluegrass Cafe" will have his or her name entered into a drawing to win copies of the books shown above. Dr. Ralph's autobiography, Man Of Constant Sorrow: My Life And Times, is a must-read for all fans of "old-time mountain music," as he gives an interesting account of his life in the music business. The multi-talented Country Music Hall of Famer, Tom T. Hall, published his novel called What A Book! in 1996, and we have an autographed copy to offer in our Bluegrass Bonus Book Bonanza.

Our drawing will be held at the end of next Sunday's "Bluegrass Cafe" Radiothon activities. We hope to be with you from our "usual" 4-7PM, but will have to let you know, as there's always a possibility of preemption of some part of the show for UCONN Women's Basketball in the NCAA tournament.

We'll keep you posted...

UPDATE: The Women's Basketball game on Sunday has a tip-off time of 12:16PM, so the BG Cafe WILL NOT be preempted from 4-7PM. We hope you'll consider joining us and making a pledge...

Radiothon -- Week #1

Hey everybody -

Thanks to everyone who made a pledge today during our first week of Radiothon at the BG Cafe. We had a pretty successful day -- in our five hours on the air today, 38 listeners picked up the phone and brought us a bit more than halfway to our station-set, two-week show "goal." Many thanks!!!

We still have LOTS of great CDs and other WHUS goodies to offer as premiums next Sunday...assuming the program isn't preempted by the UCONN Women's Basketball team playing in the NCAA tourney. We won't know if there's a preemption next Sunday 'til after tomorrow night's Selection Show, but we'll let you know as soon as we find out, I promise.

In the meantime, THANKS again to all of you who supported WHUS today! The show wouldn't be nearly as fun without your support...

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/7/2010

Sunday was one busy day for the WHUS Sports Department. In the afternoon, there were preemptions of our regular WHUS programming for both UCONN Women's Hockey, as well as UCONN Women's Basketball Big East tournament action. Craziness! Beginning about 4:30, though, we got on the air with the BG Cafe. Hope you were able to join us for a bit...

While we didn't include a whole lot of brand new music during this week's show, we were able to play what I think is the title tune from a forthcoming CD on Mountain Roads Recordings by Big Country Bluegrass --"The Boys In Hats And Ties" seems to be another tribute tune to Lester & Earl from the pen of Tom T. and Miss Dixie Hall, as well as Don Rigsby. We look forward to hearing the whole new CD from Big Country BG. The great duo of Reno & Smiley also have a "new" recording out on Rural Rhythm called "Bluegrass 1963." This CD contains a lot of the audio tracks from a TV show/pilot that Don & Red did for Kroger in 1963, and even includes a duet or two with the Stanley Brothers. Great stuff!

For the next two Sundays, we'll be asking for your support during our Radiothon campaign. As usual, there will be lots of great items we can offer to you as "thank you gifts" for your support of WHUS (and, of course, BG Cafe). In addition to new TV shirts offered by WHUS (with a choice of 4 different colors, I believe), we have accumulated over 100 great BG CDs to offer you as premiums. I'll be posting a list of those on this blog later in the week. Please note that the BG Cafe will begin on March 14th at 2PM, as Joe the Student DJ will still be on his Spring Break, so we'll be covering his timeslot. Please join Jim & I starting at 2PM, and we hope you'll consider making a pledge to WHUS. Thanks!

Have a great week!

Amy

    "Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 2/28/2010

    Hi Folks!

Last Sunday was my only show for February (just in under the wire) because Amy graciously did the show on Valentines Day to give me the opportunity to experience the whole day at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival. I hope you all have an opportunity to share work duties with someone as nice as Amy.

New music on this show included songs from Patuxent Partners, Jim Lloyd and the Skyliners, Josh Williams, Michael Martin Murphey, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Larry Stephenson, Chris Warner, Thomas Wywrot, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Dailey & Vincent, Brand New Strings, and The Earl Brothers.

I was inspired by a great interview of Dudley Connell discussing the history of the Johnson Mountain Boys I heard on Bluegrass Country dot org earlier in the month, so besides playing a track from the JMB's first Rounder LP (not yet released on CD), I also put on a special set of other artists' songs using the JMB or JMB band members. This included songs from Hazel Dickens, Phyllis Boyens, Delia Bell & Bill Grant, Bob Paisley, and James King.

    WHUS
will be having the annual Radiothon soon which will give Bluegrass Cafe two Sundays, March 14 & 21, to entice you to support what we do to bring bluegrass music to the airwaves in Southern New England. Thanks to your excellent support, Bluegras
s Cafe has led the station's fund raising effort for the past two years. We hope you keep bluegrass on top again this year!

    Regards,

    Jim Beaver
