"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/22/2019

Roy Claxton Acuff
 (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992)
During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we paid musical tribute to three soon-to-be members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, a bit of newer music, some Bluegrass music from one of the subjects of the "Country Music" documentary series, and a belated birthday tribute to the King of Country Music, Roy Acuff.

This coming Thursday evening, two individual acts (Mike Auldridge and Bill Emerson) as well as one band (the Kentucky Colonels) will be inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame.  We shared music from each of these performers who have been such a vital part of the Bluegrass community over the years.

Last Sunday (September 15th) was the birth anniversary of Roy Claxton Acuff, the King of Country Music.  The music of Roy Acuff has been covered numerous times in the world of Bluegrass music, too, so this week, we shared a dozen Roy Acuff songs in belated celebration of what would have been Roy's 116th birthday.

Mr. Acuff has been recently featured on the wonderful Ken Burns documentary, "Country Music."  Another prominent subject on a couple of these episodes has been California honky-tonk singer, Rose Maddox, who made a Bluegrass record of her own in 1962.  We shared a few songs from that collection simply titled, "Rose Maddox Sings Bluegrass."  Indeed, she did.  Great stuff.

And if all of that wasn't enough, we included brand-new music from fiddler Jason Barie, as well as the Mosley Brothers, and Donna Ulisse.  Other 2019 releases we heard were by Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, No Time Flatt, Johnny & Jeanette Williams, Blue Highway, Audie Blaylock & Redline, and Hammertowne.

I'll be heading down to North Carolina this week to check out some of the annual World of Bluegrass events down there, so hope you will join James & Cathy Ward sitting in for our Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/15/2019

Happy Birthday, Bill Monroe!
(September 13, 1911 - September 9, 1996)
Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was dominated by William Smith Monroe, with songs about Bill Monroe, songs written by Bill Monroe, and songs performed by Bill Monroe.  Playing all of this Monroe-related music always seems like an appropriate way to celebrate the September birthday of the man recognized as the Father of Bluegrass.  Hope you were able to join us!

Mid-September isn't just the birth month of Bill Monroe, though, as we also briefly celebrated two Country Music Hall of Famers who have had an incredible influence on Bluegrass music.  There were a few songs from the songbook of the one and only Hank Williams (born September 17, 1923) and one song from the King Of Country Music, Roy Acuff (born September 15, 1903).  Be on the lookout for more Acuff songs during next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.

Hope you were able to tune in today, but if not, we sure hope you will consider joining us next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/8/2019

With my grandmother, Fannie Mae Butler Orlomoski Burgess
Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was (almost) all about the birthdays, as we remembered everyone from Jimmie Rodgers to Bill Monroe.  Plus, today is National Grandparents Day, so how could we not play a couple of songs celebrating grandmothers and grandfathers?  And then, there was a bit of brand-new music to share, too, so the show was just plain ol' packed with music.  Fun.

While we didn't play any songs performed by Jimmie Rodgers, himself, the influence of the Singing Brakeman has been felt ever since this music was even known as Bluegrass.  Bill Monroe performed Jimmie Rodgers' "Mule Skinner Blues" on his first night performing at the Grand Ole Opry, so Monroe's tune was just one of the many songs from the Jimmie Rodgers Songbook that have been covered in Bluegrass music over the years.

This is the time of year when many record labels are releasing new music, and so, we had quite a bit of brand-new music to share this week, including a live recording from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, as well as new studio recordings from several favorites including the Grascals, Audie Blaylock & Redline, and Johnny & Jeanette Williams.  Other 2019 music came from releases by Joe Hott, Connecticut's Grass Routes, Larry Sparks, and Hammertowne.

And, of course, we celebrated a few Bluegrass birthdays this week, with selections from Paul Adkins, James King, Lou Reid, Rick Pardue, Tim Stafford, and Bill HarrellBill Monroe's birthday comes up this week, too, and while we didn't have time today to do a big, many-song tribute to the Father of Bluegrass, we will put together a full tribute for next week's show.

Thanks for listening!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/1/2019

Kitty Wells with Johnnie & Jack
Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe included a Bluegrass celebration of the 100th birthday anniversary of the Queen of Country Music, a full hour-half of semi-"old-fashioned" radio broadcasting with music from several LPs, some songs for Labor Day, and of, course, a little bit of new music, too.

Though we don't know of too many Bluegrass renditions of the music of Kitty Wells, we managed to find a few to play in honor of the 100th birthday anniversary of Kitty Wells, who was born August 30, 1919.  Without Kitty Wells stepping forward and becoming a band leader in the early 1950s -- becoming more than just the token "girl singer" with her husband's act (Johnnie & Jack) -- there may not have been other female band leaders in country and later, Bluegrass music.

While it's been a mighty long time since I've had to put together a radio show featuring nothing but music from LPs, it was fun to try out programming half-hour increments of LP music this summer.  On Sunday, the records came back for a second Summer session, so we may continue trying this out every few weeks.

There was a tiny bit of new music, too, including brand-new music from the Po' Ramblin' Boys, No Time Flatt, and Jesse McReynolds & the Virginia Boys, as well as 2019 music from the Edgar Loudermilk Band featuring Jeff Autry, Hammertowne, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, and the Seldom Scene.

Hope you enjoyed your Labor Day weekend, and we'll be looking for you once again next Sunday afternoon - 4-7PM.

Have a good week!

Amy O.
