"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/28/2011 - Hurricane Edition

Hi Folks.

Hurricane Irene made sure our power was out at the house, and that many roads were impassable, but UCONN's power was up as was WHUS.  While Amy was blocked from getting to the station, I didn't mind stepping in to keep Bluegrass Cafe on the air.

I used this unexpected opportunity to play many of the tunes that have been left on the table for lack of time during previous shows, and to include a good dose of new music, too.

Rain, flood, storm, and weather-themed songs peppered the playlist in light of the conditions around New England at the time.

New music making an appearance on this show included songs from Larry Gillis and Alex Leach, Blue Highway, Nu-Blu, Dale Ann Bradley, Lee Marcus, John Bowman, Mountain Faith, Rodney Dillard, and Darin and Brooke Aldridge.

If the weather holds out, there is a good chance Amy will be with you next Sunday over the Labor Day weekend, so be sure to tune in.  I'm sure she has some good storm tales along with some great bluegrass music.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/21/2011

Hi Folks.

Most of this show was songs from many of the IBMA nominees that were announced this past Wednesday. Many in the Northeast were pleased to see seven nominations for upstate New York farm boys, The Gibson Brothers, but there were many other great artists and songs represented on the list.

Also, the newest Hall of Fame inductees are Del McCoury and George Shuffler.

New music came from Lee Marcus, Rick Pardue & Timmy Massey, Cumberland River, and Jim Lauderdale.

We celebrated two bluegrass birthdays on this show, Carter Stanley (Aug. 27, 1925) and J. D. Crowe (Aug. 27, 1937) and played sets of their music to celebrate.

Amy will be with you next week, so tune in to hear the banjos and fiddles ring.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/14/2011

It was a rainy Sunday in eastern CT, and even though a lot of folks must have gone to the Firebox to enjoy the hard-driving sounds of Larry Gillis, there were still a good number of folks listening to the radio and the BG Cafe.  Even though it got a little busy at times, it was still pretty enjoyable...at least on my end of the microphone, anyway.

Today is the birthday of "Bluegrass Ambassador," Steve Martin (born August 14, 1945), so playing one of his tunes was a must.  It's also the birthday of a fine BG songwriter from Alabama, Jake Landers (born August 14, 1938).  In celebration of the birthday of Jake Landers, we played just six of his pretty well-known songs from the BG world, which have been recorded by performers such as the Country Gentlemen, Red Allen, Bobby Osborne, and Jake's former employer, Bill Monroe.  Great stuff!

Brand-spanking new music came today from the new project by Dale Ann Bradley ("Somewhere South Of Crazy" on Compass Records).  We also played a couple of tunes from a CD Jim played a few weeks ago from Rick Pardue & Timmy Massey called "The Ghost Of Noah Hayes."  Other newer music came from Volume Five, Shannon Slaughter, Blue Highway, James Reams & the Barnstormers, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Russell Johnson, and Randy Waller & the Country Gentlemen.

Be sure to join Jim next week for another edition of the BG Cafe -- he'll be with you beginning at 4PM...

Have a good week -
Amy

Have you "liked" us yet?

Susan Forbes Hansen played a song early in her "Sunday Night Folk Festival" tonight called, "I've Grown Accustomed To My Facebook."  Of course, this is a parody of "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" from "My Fair Lady," but the lyrics this time around mentioned how the singer was always on Facebook, wondering how many "friends" and "likes" she'd gained on the social networking site.  The lyrics were pretty funny, but the sentiment was kind of true, I'm afraid...

Confession time:  we'd be most pleased if you would take a few moments next time you're on Facebook to visit our very own "BG Cafe" page, and "like" it.  What do you get if you do?  Money?  Fame?  Anything?  Well, no, but this is a good resource for you to find our show playlists, information on local or regional BG events, and any other BG info that we think might be of interest to you.  Why, even if you aren't a registered user of Facebook, you can still look at our "BG Cafe" Facebook page by visiting:

We'll be looking for you!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/7/2011

What a busy Bluegrass weekend it was here in Connecticut!  Congratulations to Roger Moss, Brian Hall, and all of the hardworking Podunk board members and volunteers for making the "sweet 16" edition of the Podunk Bluegrass Festival a great, memorable time for a whole lot of folks.  It's pretty easy to see why this team won the 2010 IBMA Event of the Year award...could there be another win in the future?  Time will tell...

So, while I was able to be at Podunk on both Friday and Saturday, for today's show, I chose to play a few tunes from some of the performers I was able to see and hear in my time in East Hartford.  Among those:  Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Jim Hurst, the Steep Canyon Rangers, and Darin & Brooke Aldridge.

As always, new music was on the agenda, as well, and with that, we played tunes from the aforementioned Darin & Brooke Aldridge (who have a great new CD on Mountain Home), as well as a North Carolina Band called Dehlia Low, the forthcoming Rounder project from Blue Highway, solo projects from Tommy Webb and banjo picker, Lee Marcus, as well as all-gospel CDs from Paul Williams & the Victory Trio and Rodney Dillard & the Dillard Band.

If you've ever listened to the show, you probably know that I like to salute the country singers of year's past.  Today, I played a BG versions of four songs originally made popular by the most successful country singer of the 1950s, Webb Pierce.  This Country Music Hall of Famer would have celebrated his 90th birthday this week, as he was born on August 8, 1921 (and died February 24, 1991).  Like so many of his country music contemporaries, Pierce's music has been mined for the BG world, so why not listen to a bit of it this week?

Finally, we were able to give away two pairs of passes to the upcoming Saddleback Mountain Bluegrass Festival which takes place August 12 & 13 in Rangeley, Maine.  With a lineup that includes Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, as well as Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, we had no problems giving away these tickets.  Thanks to Saddleback promoter and organizer, Mark Robie, for offering them to our listeners.

I'll be back in the BG Cafe with you next Sunday afternoon, as Jim will be enjoying the hard driving sounds of Larry Gillis, who will be at the Firebox Restaurant in Hartford next week.  If you can't be at the Firebox, by all means, listen to the ol' radio for a good dose of the BG, won't you?

Have a good week!

This show featured many of the artists appearing at the Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival this coming weekend, 4-7 August.

Other Podunk artists appearing on this show were Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, The Steep Canyon Rangers, Donna Ulisse, Mac McHale (in the form of Taylors Grove with Carolyn Hutton), Dan Paisley & The Southern Grass, Darin & Brooke Aldridge (debuting a new CD), Dixie Bee-Liners, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, and The Travelin' McCourys (in the form of The Del McCoury Band). Other artists to look for at Podunk include Mountain Heart, The Kruger Brothers, Fitzmaurice, and Katie Wilson & The Two-Time String Band.

We also played new music from Rodney Dillard, songs from a new Ricky Skaggs country-done-bluegrass project, a new band on the scene called Cumberland River, several songs from Louisa Branscomb's new songwriter CD (Louisa will be conducting songwriting seminars at Podunk), and the Kathy Kallick Band.

Amy will be broadcasting Sunday afternoon at the end of the festival, so tune in as you are packing up and leaving.

And we hope we see you there. Support live bluegrass music!

Filling in for "Bluegrass Rules" - 7/26/2011 & 8/2/2011

At this point, we hope you're aware that there's more than one Bluegrass music program on the airwaves at WHUS.  Longtime BG follower James Ward, and his mom, Cathy Ward, have been hosting their one-hour "Bluegrass Rules" every Tuesday from 3-4PM since mid-May.  However, the Wards have been away from the microphones for the last two weeks, as they attended the Ossipee Valley Music Festival in Maine, and then, extended their vacation a tiny bit.  No doubt, if you're attending the Podunk Bluegrass Festival this coming weekend, you'll find the Wards walking around and taking in all of the great music.  Be sure to join them next Tuesday afternoon from 3-4PM, won't you?

Speaking of Podunk, the reigning IBMA Bluegrass Event of the Year begins just two days from today, and promises to be a top-notch festival with something that will appeal to every BG listener -- from the traditional to the contemporary.  The lineup is a quality one, and boasts talent such as Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, the Kruger Brothers, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Steep Canyon Rangers, the Travelin' McCourys, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, the Grass Pistols, the Dixie Bee-Liners, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, Donna Ulisse & the Poor Mountain Boys, and a few others.  In addition, there's a very full workshop schedule, and a great band contest on Sunday.  It all happens at Martin Park in nearby East Hartford, CT.  Check it all out, if you can, by calling (860)282-8241 or visit www.podunkbluegrass.net.  See you there!

I've had fun filling in for the Wards for the last two weeks, but make no mistake -- programming BG music in one-hour is challenging.  I tried to feature music from a few of the Podunk performers over the two weeks, and think I managed to do that.
Be sure to join the Wards next Tuesday from 3-4PM, and I'll see you in the "BG Cafe" this coming Sunday starting at 4PM.
