"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/30/2015

On this second to last day of August, the UConn campus was quite filled with returning students and parents roaming around campus.  Since returning students means the return of various UConn sporting events, Jim & Marti's Red Rooster Party (renewed for the Fall semester from 2-4PM on Sunday afternoons) was partially preempted for a Women's Soccer game.  All of this means that we started off Sunday's radio broadcast around 3:05PM with a mixture of music you might hear on both RRP and Bluegrass Cafe.  Primarily, we began with a few songs from the late Kitty Wells, who would have celebrated her 96th birthday today (born August 30, 1919) -- music both from Kitty and Bluegrass covers of some of her songs.

Beginning at 4PM and for the next hour, we drew our playlist completely from members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.  While it's always fun to play music from the "Founding Fathers" of Bluegrass, our purpose for playing these performers on Sunday was because at 5PM, we visited with Fred Bartenstein -- one of five nominees for Bluegrass Print/Media Person of the Year for his work on the book:  The Bluegrass Hall of Fame Inductee Biographies, 1991-2014.  Along with fellow nominee Gary Reid, Mr. Bartenstein worked on this delightfully presented, very informative resource about all of the members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame (located in the International Bluegrass Music Museum (IBMM) in Owensboro, Kentucky -- the closest city of any size to Bill Monroe's birthplace of Rosine, Kentucky).  The book is an extension of profiles of the Hall of Famers that Mr. Bartenstein put together for the IBMM website (some found here), and was finally published in January 2015.  If you are a person who enjoys Bluegrass and its history, you owe it to yourself to track down a copy of this book.

Beyond the Hall of Famers and our conversation with Mr. Bartenstein, we shared music from performers who will be in our listening area in the not-too-distant future, and a regular hodgepodge collection of songs.

Big thanks to Fred Bartenstein for joining us on Sunday afternoon!  We sure hope you'll be certain to tune in once more next week when Jim joins you for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

Playlist - 8/23/2015 - Carter Stanley, J.D. Crowe

Hi Folks,

Last Sunday's show celebrated birthdays of two giants of bluegrass music:  Carter Stanley (Aug 27, 1925 - Dec 1, 1966) and James Dee "J. D." Crowe (Aug 27, 1937).

Carter Stanley, half of the Stanley Brothers along with his brother Ralph, created a first-generation bluegrass sound evocative of the Clinch Mountain, Virginia, home of their birth.  Many fans today, nearly 50 years after Carter's untimely death, consider him the consummate soulful voice of a bluegrass lead singer.  A prolific songwriter, the songs Carter wrote are part of the bedrock of the genre.

J. D. Crowe is the banjo player most named as an influence after Earl Scruggs.  His early work with Jimmy Martin and Paul Williams followed by The Kentucky Mountain Boys with Red Allen and Doyle Lawson is a textbook on how bluegrass should be played, but his follow-up to those early years was The New South which may have influenced more baby boom pickers and fans than any other group.  The New South had many luminaries over its existence including Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Keith Whitley, Jimmy Gaudreau, and many more.  Their eponymous album, simply known as "Rounder 0044" after the label number, is considered one of the most influential bluegrass albums in history.

We hope you enjoyed the show.  Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring next Sunday.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/16/2015

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated a few birthdays -- Bluegrass ones and non-Bluegrass ones -- and talked a bit about the upcoming International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards on October 1st.

The Bluegrass birthday we celebrated this week belonged to one Jake Landers - born August 14, 1938.  Mr. Landers is not only a fine musician (he was a long-time member of the Dixie Gentlemen), but also a wonderful Bluegrass songwriter with songs recorded by everyone from Bill Monroe to the Country Gentlemen to Sideline and more.

The non-Bluegrass birthdays belong to two Country Music Hall of Famers who would have celebrated birthdays on August 12th -- Porter Wagoner (8/12/1927) and Buck Owens (8/12/1929).  These two may have been country singers, but both recorded Bluegrass-inspired records during their careers, and selections from both of their song catalogs have often been recorded by Bluegrass performers.  It wouldn't seem right to overlook their birthdays, so we don't!

To most folks, if you say "Buck Owens," you might immediately think about the late Don Rich -- Buck's right-hand man and bandleader of the popular Buckaroos.  While Don Rich died at a young age in a motorcycle accident on July 17, 1974, he was born on August 15, 1941.

The final nominees for the 2015 IBMA Awards were announced this week.  There were some surprises, but mostly a lot of familiar names that are on the final list for awards.  The names of the two newest members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame were also announced, and we played songs featuring both of them this week:  Larry Sparks and Bill Keith.

It was a full show today -- hope you enjoyed it!  Jim will be back in the Bluegrass Cafe with you next Sunday afternoon -- join him!

Have a good week!
