A bit o' Christmas & Happy Birthday, Grand Ole Opry fill-in - 11/27/2015

The Ryman Auditorium was the full-time home of the
Grand Ole Opry for 31 years (1943-1974).
Hope you're all having a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend with your friends and family!  This holiday week at WHUS has provided lots of opportunities for several of us non-students to do "extra" radio programs, and I got to do one on Friday morning as Jimmy T. was away from his "Sugar Shack."  The music that formed my playlist was one small portion of

Christmas music and one large portion of music celebrating the Grand Ole Opry -- WSM's broadcast gem that officially began broadcasting on Nashville's WSM on November 28, 1925.  Many of the songs played were drawn from live recordings made during Grand Ole Opry broadcasts, spanning from the late 1940s to the decade of the 1960s.  Other songs were not live Opry recordings, but were performed by folks who were major stars of the Grand Ole Opry at one time, including Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe,  and Ernest Tubb.  It was great fun for me -- hope you enjoyed it, too!

If you're interested in learning more of the Grand Ole Opry's rich history, there are several books filled with wonderful photos and information.  Here are just a couple of recommendations:

The Grand Ole Opry:  The Making Of An American Icon by Colin Escott (Center Street, 2006)

The Grand Ole Opry History Of
Country Music by Paul Kingsbury
(Villard Books, 1995)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!  Be sure to join Jim in the Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon.  Rumor has it that he may even be hosting a special in-studio guest.  Tune in to find out at 4PM, won't you?  :)

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/22/2015

On this Sunday before Thanksgiving, we opened the show with four songs with titles that were either turkey-related or eating-related.  Those seemed like logical choices to start our three hours on the ol' radio today.

While the majority of songs we played came from older recordings, we still found quite a few records from 2015 to share.  Among them were selections from the South Carolina Broadcasters, Big Country Bluegrass, Darren & Brooke Aldridge, Lorraine Jordan & Carolina Road, the Feinberg Brothers, Nothin' Fancy, Unspoken Tradition, and Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out.  We also featured a couple of numbers from a new band from North Carolina:  Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass.

In addition, we remembered Mike Kropp -- a longtime banjo player with Northern Lights who died on November 10th.

Best wishes to you all for a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Playlist - 11/15/2015 - South Carolina Broadcasters

Hi Folks.
David, Andy, and Ivy

The centerpiece of today's show was an interview with Andy Edmonds and Ivy Sheppard who, along with David Sheppard, are The South Carolina Broadcasters.  The group made a big impression at Strawberry Park in 2014 and were invited back in 2015.  They are on the schedule for Podunk in 2016.

The Broadcasters play a type of music between old-time and bluegrass that they call "primitive bluegrass."  It draws heavily on the old-time canon while incorporating bluegrass songs and sensibilities and their unique 3-part harmony.  They have a new album that was released on CD and electronically last month, and LP very soon.

We also played new music from Alan Bibey  & Grasstowne; The Grass Cats; Bill Runkle & Smith Hollow; Bear Minimum; Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out; and David Peterson.

Heritage Corner bluegrass included The Stanley Brothers, Chief Powatan, Carl Story, Charlie Moore, Hack Johnson, Doc Watson, Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis, The Renfro Family, and Vern Williams.

We gave away two pairs of tickets to lucky listeners for the Chris Thile concert at Jorgensen next Saturday evening, and fielded a bunch of phone calls. Thank you to all who called in.

Amy will be with you next Sunday to make the banjos and fiddles ring, so don't miss it.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/8/2015

Sunday's edition of Bluegrass Cafe arrived with more vinyl than I've played on the air in years, a few songs in honor of Veterans Day, some new music, and even a few technical difficulties!  It's all part of the "fun" of live radio, right?  You betcha!

Reno & Smiley & the Tennessee Cut-Ups with
young Ronnie Reno on mandolin.
We started the show with several songs from the songbook of Don Reno and Arthur "Red" Smiley.  Was there a special reason for including so many Reno & Smiley tunes today?  Nope!  Do we really need an "excuse" to play this many wonderful recordings?  Nah.  In addition to original recordings from Don & Red & the Tennessee Cut-Ups, we heard covers of Reno & Smiley songs from the Seth Sawyer Band, the Johnson Mountain Boys, David Peterson & 1946, the Traditional Grass, and the Reno Brothers.

We shared a little bit of newer music this week from Bill Runkle & Smith Hollow, Diamond Creek, Donna Ulisse, and Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass.  Other 2015 music was also included from the Gibson Brothers, the Feinberg Brothers, and Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie.

I dug a little bit into my record collection for this show, too, and pulled out a few LPs I'd not heard in a long time.  Among them:  a 1967 recording from Zap Records featuring the Country Gentlemen ("Live From The Stage Of The Roanoke Bluegrass Festival"); Jimmy Gaudreau's 1989 Webco LP, "Classic J.A.G.;" the Nashville Bluegrass Band's "To Be His Child" on Rounder; and a song from a New York performer, John Rossbach & Chestnut Grove.

In honor of the late Bill Hall -- a New England Bluegrass performer who would have turned 80 years old today -- we featured a couple of tracks from his 1984 LP on Old Homestead Records:  "In The Shadow Of The Pines."  And in the spirit of Veterans Day, we included a couple of songs in honor of those who have served.  Thanks to all veterans.

All in all, it was a full day of Bluegrass.  Hope you heard something you enjoyed somewhere along the way, and that you'll be certain to join Jim for next Sunday's edition of the Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

Playlist - 11/1/2015

Hi Folks.

Today I just played what I wanted.

There was some new music by Greg Blake. Greg is a member of Jeff Scroggins and Colorado, but he has a solo project out now titled Songs of Heart and Home.  A song that Greg entered to become a finalist at the 2015 Podunk Bluegrass Festival Songwriting Competition is on the new CD, and that's the one we played.

We also heard new music from a couple of groups that have a foot into both old-time and bluegrass, Spencer Branch and The South Carolina Broadcasters, both of whom have new albums out this year.

We also heard from David Peterson's newest gospel album that was recorded live in the studio.

Most of the remainder of the show was some of my favorite classic bluegrass.  I hope you enjoyed.

Amy will be with you next week making the banjos and fiddles ring.  Tune in!
