"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/21/2024

Ben Eldridge (8/13/1938 - 4/14/2024)
During this day's Bluegrass Cafe, we put the main focus on the music of Ben Eldridge -- the banjo playing co-founder of The Seldom Scene -- who died one week ago at the age of 85.  Along with his Scene bandmates, Ben was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2014.  He was the last of the original members of the Scene to retire from the band after 44 years of holding down the banjo role.  By all accounts, Ben Eldridge was an incredibly nice and funny man, and we will always be grateful for his contribution to the Bluegrass lexicon.  To celebrate his life and his career, we shared several songs from the Scene, as well as a few selections from a couple of the albums Ben recorded with Cliff Waldron & the New Shades Of Grass in 1970 and 1971.  If you would like to read more about the life of Ben Eldridge, check out this fairly extensive remembrance published in Bluegrass Today or read his biography from the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.

This week, it was also announced that a very important album in the history of Bluegrass music is being added to the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.  "The New South" (featuring J.D. Crowe along with Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Bobby Slone, and Jerry Douglas) was released by Rounder Records in 1975.  Better known by its catalog number (Rounder 0044) than the album title, this well-regarded work is probably on the Top 10 favorite list of albums among many, many Bluegrass fans and musicians.  How nice to know it'll be preserved forever in the Library of Congress.

There wasn't a lot of new music to share this week, but we did include new or recent selections from Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road, Bluegrass Express, the Red Camel Collective, Dave Adkins, and the Wilson Banjo Co.

Hope you have a wonderful week.  Thanks for listening to our Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/14/2024

Our Tax Day Eve Bluegrass Cafe broadcast on April 14th started with several songs about money (or lack of it) and, of course, taxes.  Other sets of music from Sunday's show focused on newer tracks, and there were several April birthdays to remember.  Hope you were able to join us, but if not, read on for the recap...

For April birthdays, we remembered the 60th birthday of Stuart Duncan (born April 14, 1964), as well as the 80th birthday of Doyle Lawson (born April 20, 1944).  We also celebrated the birthdays (or birth anniversaries) of Delia Bell, Bob Dick, and Hylo Brown.

There was a bit of recent music from Alison Brown & Steve Martin, Darren Beachley & Kyle Windbeck, Junior Sisk, Adam McIntosh, the Price Sisters, Authentic Unlimited, Darin & Brooke Aldridge, and Howard Parker.

And we celebrated two Pioneers of Bluegrass who were honored Sunday afternoon by the Rhode Island Bluegrass Alliance at their Hall of Fame ceremonies.  We celebrated both the late Bill Rawlings, as well as Dave Papuga, an eastern Connecticut guitarist who worked for several years with the Pike Brothers and Earlene Pike.  We'll focus more on their music over the next few weeks.

Hope you were able to join us on Sunday, but if not, we sure hope you'll consider tuning in this coming Sunday from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/7/2024

Our first Bluegrass Cafe for the month of April started with nearly an hour's worth of songs featuring "A" performers (requirement:  the performer's last name or band name began with the letter "A").  We also honored a New England Bluegrass pioneer who recently passed, shared a little bit of new music, remembered the great Merle Haggard's birth anniversary with lots of covers of his music, and included a telephone visit with Alex MacLeod of Rock Hearts.  It was a stuffed three hours -- hope you were able to join us!

A few weeks ago, old friend Dave Shaw asked me if I was aware that Herb Hooven (May 29, 1931 - February 22, 2024) had passed.  I recognized his name, but wasn't overly familiar with this multi-instrumentalist.  Turns out this Southern transplant to Massachusetts played music with some very influential Bluegrass musicians over the years, including Jimmy Martin, the Lilly Brothers & Don Stover, and Joe Val & the New England Bluegrass Boys, among others.  Thanks to Dave for providing some of Herb's music for us to enjoy.  If you'd like to know more about Herb Hooven, here's a link to his obituary.

We checked in with Alex MacLeod from Rock Hearts around 5:30PM today.  This busy band is getting ready to release their second recording for 615 Hideaway Records later on this Spring.  If you would like to see this band perform, they have an upcoming show at the Suffield VFW in West Suffield, CT on April 13th.  For more information about Rock Hearts, their music, or their upcoming gigs, check out the band's website.

And we couldn't let the birth (and death) anniversary of the great Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) pass without acknowledgement, either.  Though the Hag was not a Bluegrass performer -- even though he released "The Bluegrass Sessions" in 2007 -- his music has greatly influenced many Bluegrass performers over the years.  We included three songs by Merle Haggard in our tribute set and six Bluegrass covers, though we could have played far more.

Hope you were able to join us for the show today.  We hope to be back on the air with you next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM with another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.  Consider joining us, if you can.

Have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/31/2024

For a Bluegrass Cafe that aired on Easter Sunday, you might expect to hear all sorts of Easter-themed Bluegrass songs...and you would be absolutely right!  We included Easter music performed by everybody from the Stanley Brothers to the Old Time Bluegrass Singers to the Country Gentlemen Tribute Band to Paul Adkins & the Borderline Band.  And there were many more songs that we could have played, but we just ran out of time.  Hope you enjoyed this blessed day!

Sunday was the last day of March, which is known as Women's History Month.  To that end, we shared several selections from some of the finest female singers and musicians in the history of Bluegrass music.  We could have easily filled the whole show with just music from female performers, but instead, we'll keep on enjoying music from these fine musicians whenever we can, no matter the month.

And there were a few late March/early April birthdays to celebrate, including those of young Wyatt Ellis, Jeremy Stephens, Missy Raines, Cliff Waldron, and Bluegrass Hall of Famer Bill Clifton.

Finally, we included a little bit of new music from the likes of Alison Brown with Steve Martin, Junior Sisk, Daniel Grindstaff (with Trey Hensley), and two brand-new recordings from Authentic Unlimited.

Enjoy your week, and we'll hope to join you once again on Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.
