"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/24/2024

We celebrated a few March birthdays during Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, including those of Bluegrass Hall of Fame members John Starling, Dean Webb, and Paul Williams.  We also remembered a banjo playing Blue Grass Boy of the early 1950s, Rudy Lyle (March 17, 1936 - February 11, 1985), with several songs on which he played an active part.  This included music (of course!) from Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys, as well as Uncle Joe Johnson and Jimmy Skinner, too.  If you would like to know more about Rudy Lyle, there was a biography published about him in 2022:  Rudy Lyle:  The Unsung Hero Of The Five-String Banjo by Max Wareham.

There was some newer music to share during our broadcast, including brand-new selections from Junior Sisk, Adam McIntosh, the Tim Raybon Band, Crandall Creek with Greg Blake, the Edgar Loudermilk Band, Rock Hearts, and Lindley Creek.  There was also recent music from High Fidelity, the Price Sisters, the Kathy Kallick Band, the Country Gentlemen Tribute Band, and Barry Abernathy (from the new Rick Lang-penned gospel collection).

Our plan is to join you once again on Easter Sunday afternoon.  If you're able to tune in, please do!  We should be on the air from 4-7PM...as always.

Have a good week -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/17/2024

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe included a three-hour mix of Bluegrass songs old and new.  We included two separate song sets celebrating both St. Patrick's Day and the First Day of Spring.  Around the midway point, we had a telephone visit with Michelle Canning, a Massachusetts-born musician/songwriter who now makes her home in Nashville, and this coming weekend, is hosting her 13th annual Night On The Edge benefit for the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.  If you would like to know more about this worthy cause, please click on this link.

Marti & Jim at WHUS - November 2006
We remembered the late Al Jones with some of his music, and we sent out a couple of songs in honor of Marti Harmon, the wife of our former "Bluegrass Cafe" show co-host, Jim Beaver, as Marti passed from this world on March 12th.  Jim and Marti also were the creators and hosts of the delightful "Red Rooster Party" on WHUS for several years.  Simply put, Marti was an amazing lady who did so many interesting things during her lifetime.  If you would like to read Marti's lovely obituary, please do.  Rest in peace, Marti.

Both UConn basketball teams are getting ready to play in the NCAA tournament beginning this weekend, and with tournament action, that always means there is a possibility of our radio show being preempted.  We'll keep you posted if that happens as soon as we find out.

Enjoy the rest of the week, and we'll hope to have you join us on Sunday afternoon.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/10/2024

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe got an unexpected (to me) delayed start due to the WHUS broadcast of a UConn Women's Basketball semifinal game in the 2024 Big East Tournament.  In the days before COVID, it was not at all unusual for our showtime to be preempted during basketball season at UConn, but that hasn't happened all that often in recent years...until yesterday.  We began the show around 4:30PM, so hope you were still able to enjoy 150 minutes of Bluegrass music on Sunday afternoon.

We began our delayed program with a belated birthday tribute to the great Bluegrass Hall of Fame banjo picker of The Dillards, Doug Dillard (March 6, 1937 - May 16, 2012).  Somehow or other, Doug's birthday got overlooked during our broadcast on March 3rd.  For this week, we celebrated the birthdays of Norman Blake (born March 10, 1938), as well as those of Marshall Wilborn, Raymond Fairchild, Bob Paisley, Kristin Scott Benson, Ronnie McCoury, and Tim O'Brien.

International Women's Day was celebrated on March 8th, and while we could -- and should -- devote more airtime to the music of Bluegrass Women, we took a few minutes on Sunday to belatedly celebrate a few of the fine women in Bluegrass music.  To that end, we heard music from Becky Buller, Wilma Lee Cooper, Hazel Dickens, Alice Gerrard, Alison Krauss, Laurie Lewis, Claire Lynch, Lynn Morris, Laura Orshaw, and Rhonda Vincent.

And there was some new music to share, too, this time from a new band named Red Camel Collective, as well as newer selections from the Price Sisters, Barry Abernathy (from the forthcoming Rick Lang-penned Gospel recording), Volume Five, Darren Nicholson, Michelle Canning, the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, the Travelin' McCourys, Missy Raines & Allegheny, and Junior Sisk.

It was a busy, abbreviated show!  Sure hope you could join us, but if not this week, then I hope you'll seek out our next broadcast on Sunday, March 17th.  We should have three big hours of Bluegrass Cafe to share beginning at 4PM.

Until then, have a great week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/3/2024

Sunday was a gorgeous, early March day with weather that made folks think spring had arrived in eastern Connecticut.  It also happened to be the 101st birth anniversary of the one and only Arthel Lane"Doc" Watson (March 3, 1923 - May 29, 2012), so how could we not both start and finish our Bluegrass Cafe with loads of music from Doc's vast catalog?

Doc Watson was not the only Bluegrass Hall of Famer whose birthday was celebrated this week, though.  The great, super-unique John Duffey would have turned 90 years old this week (March 4, 1934 - December 10, 1996).  We remembered John with several selections featuring him from both the Country Gentlemen and the Seldom Scene.

The award-winning fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes also celebrated a birthday this week, so we shared music from both her first record and her forthcoming one.

And if all of that wasn't enough, we pulled out another Feature Letter of the Week.  In this case, we shared music from lots of fine "M" performers, whose last name or band name begins with the letter "M."  This means we included music from everyone from Bill Monroe to Muleskinner, Jimmy Martin to Lynn Morris, Del McCoury to Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and many, many other fine "M" performers.  Check out the playlist for more details.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and please consider joining me once again this coming Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.
