"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/5/2020

Happy July 5th!  America may have celebrated birthday #244 yesterday, but we continued the festivities as we opened this week's pre-recorded edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.  While we don't have access to the full WHUS Bluegrass library of recordings for these home-made broadcasts of the show, we cobbled together a few appropriate tunes that we had on-hand in honor of America, including four versions of a song the Country Gentlemen first recorded in June of 1959:  "New Freedom Bell."

Our twelfth recorded show also included several selections from a few of the newest members of Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, the Johnson Mountain Boys.  No need to gush here, as any listener to this broadcast knows I am a devoted fan of JMB, and rarely (if ever) get through a radio show without sharing their music.  Nothing will change.

Put Charlie Louvin's 2012
autobiography on your Summer reading list
As we did in April for the birth anniversary of Ira Louvin, for this week's show, we devoted a full hour plus to more Louvin music in honor of the birth anniversary of Charlie Louvin (born July 7, 1927).  There may be some repeats from the April broadcast to this one, but really, who can get tired of hearing the music of the Louvin Brothers?  Not me.

A newish New England band has a new CD on the way, too:  Rock Hearts.  We shared a selection from this new recording on today's broadcast, and we'll likely be hearing a lot more from the band in future.  Other 2020 music we heard came from Fred Travers on "The New Reso Gathering," J.B. & Jamie Dailey, High Fidelity, and the Feinberg Brothers.

Hope you've all had an enjoyable holiday weekend -- even if was a bit quieter than usual.  Feel free to check in with us when you can via email to bgcafe@gmail.com or give our Facebook page a like.

Have a great week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/28/2020

The Bluegrass Cafe Express/Special/Zephyr (choose your favorite name) rolled into the WHUS (radio) station today and featured thirty more songs about trains -- and with no repeats from our May 31st show, which also featured a whole bunch of tunes about trains.  As there are still plenty more train songs we haven't shared during these pre-recorded shows quite yet, we may put together another show featuring tunes about trains later on this summer.

During Sunday's program, we also belatedly celebrated the birthdays of two members of the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame:  banjo legend Eddie Adcock (born June 21, 1938) and New England's only (so far) BGHoF member, the late Joe Val (born June 25, 1926).  No better way to celebrate these two than to share some fine music, so we did just that.

Even with all of the trains and the birthday celebrating, we still had time for just a few newer selections, too.  This time around we included music from Special Consensus, Amanda Cook, the duo of Boone & Foster, the Feinberg Brothers, and High Fidelity.

Hope you are enjoying our pre-recorded shows, as we will keep putting them together until we are allowed back into the radio station at the University of Connecticut.  In the meantime, if you would like to contact us, please send email and/or visit our Bluegrass Cafe Facebook page and give it a "like."

Have a great week, and, of course, stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/21/2020

Happy Father's Day!
It's Father Day!  Hope all of you dads who might listen to our Bluegrass Cafe are having a wonderful day doing whatever it is that makes you happy!

We celebrated a few Bluegrass dads who have enjoyed making some fine music with their sons and daughters over the years.  To that end, we enjoyed musical selections from families with the last names of McCoury, Paisley, Feinberg, McGee, Parmley, MullinsVincent, and, of course, the Father of Bluegrass Music -- Bill Monroe with son, James.  There are, of course, other fathers who have played music with their offspring over the years, and we'll try to include more of those in future weeks of our program.  In addition, there was a whole hour of songs about fathers -- some good, and some who could use a bit of improvement, to say the least.

Stonewall Bluegrass
(Ed Vande Voorde, guitar; Pete Soukas, bass;
Tim Mowry, mandolin; Gary Filgate, banjo)
We also included a few songs from a cassette-burned-onto-CD from around 1994 featuring a New Hampshire band of the past, Stonewall Bluegrass -- "I Won't Be Troubled Anymore."  A few weeks back, I received an email from a gentleman in Austria who had also had a copy of this cassette that had been lost.  Reading his recollections of this band reminded me that they really were very good, and certainly worthy of a bit of listening time during our radio program.

Hope you all have a wonderful week.  Don't forget to check in via email (bgcafe@gmail.com) or take a look (and a "like") of our Facebook page.  Still no telling of when we might be able to return to broadcasting in a "normal" way (i.e. live from the Student Union at UConn), but we'll keep recording shows as long as necessary.

Thanks for listening, and stay healthy!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/14/2020

Lester Raymond Flatt
(June 19, 1914 - May 11, 1979)

Happy Flag Day!  Today's Bluegrass Cafe was full of birthday celebrations -- for Tony Rice (born June 8, 1951) and Lester Flatt (born June 19, 1914), and to a lesser extent for my mother, Eleanor, who just happens to celebrate her birthday on June 14th.

We started the show with several songs featuring the vocals of Bluegrass Hall of Famer Tony Rice, but we spent even more time celebrating the birthday of Bluegrass and Country Music Hall of Fame member, Lester Flatt.  To that end, we shared more than twenty songs written and/or performed by Mr. Flatt.  We even included a few songs from one of the better-known Flatt impersonators, the late Keith Whitley.

In addition to birthday celebrating, we played several songs from the just-released recording by High Fidelity:  "Banjo Player's Blues" on Rebel Records.  If you like traditional Bluegrass, this is a record for you to savor.  We also shared another song or two from 2020 releases, including music by Becky Buller, Junior Sisk, the Edgar Loudermilk Band, and the Feinberg Brothers.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and that you will consider joining me once again for another COVID-19 edition of our Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday from 4-7PM.  If you have any questions, or would just like to check in, please feel free to send me an email or check out our Facebook page.

Have a great week, and stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/7/2020

During these days of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is a sad fact that many Bluegrass festivals have been forced to cancel this summer.  As of this writing, there are still a few festivals in the northeast that haven't formally cancelled their events, but we know for certain that several festivals of New England interest -- Strawberry Park, GreyFox, the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival -- just will not happen in 2020.  This is very tough for everyone -- the promoters, the vendors, the fans, and, most especially, the performers -- as summer festivals are wickedly important to everyone's livelihood.

While we encourage you to still support your favorite performer(s) as best you can these days, we wanted to provide a sort of festival vibe with Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe.  To that end, I grabbed a few of the live CDs in my home collection, and mixed them up this week so that you might feel like you were witnessing (with your ears!) a live event.  Hope you enjoyed it.  Obviously, I couldn't play selections from every live Bluegrass recording ever made, as the fact of the matter is that I don't own every Bluegrass recording ever made.  :)  Still, I think we covered a pretty wide range of great performers.  Best of all, you didn't have to worry about rain!

We appreciate you listening to our program whenever you can.  If you want to say hello during these crazy times, feel free to email us or follow our Facebook page.

Have a wonderful week, and stay healthy!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/31/2020

All aboard!  Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe devoted one hour plus to songs about trains -- freight trains, diesel trains, the romance of the train, black trains, midnight trains, glory bound trains -- you name it!  We could easily devote several shows to just this one topic...and may spend another hour in a future program doing just that!

We also paid birthday tribute to the late Hazel Dickens, who was born on June 1, 1925.  The songs of this Bluegrass Hall of Famer continue to be frequently recorded, but on this day's show, Hazel was the featured performer.

There was a bit of newer music to share, too, with a brand-spanking new song from Carolina Blue, as well as new music from the likes of songwriter Eric Brace, Professor Dan Boner, the Feinberg Brothers, High Fidelity, Dale Ann Bradley & Tina Adair, Stephen Mougin, J.B. & Jamie Dailey, and Junior Sisk.

Hope you are enjoying our pre-recorded programs.  We'll continue to keep bringing them to you for as long as we can, but we sure do look forward to the day when the show can once again be broadcast live as it's happening.  In the meantime, be sure to email us at bgcafe@gmail.com and/or visit our Facebook page.

Have a great week, and, as always, stay healthy!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/24/2020

Two words defined our Bluegrass Cafe on this Memorial Day Sunday:  remember and celebrate.

In honor of Memorial Day, we shared several songs written about the subject of soldiers who didn't make it home from war.  Take a moment this weekend to remember the real reason for Memorial Day.

We celebrated the 84th birthday of the a man known as The Storyteller, Tom T. Hall (born May 25, 1936).  Along with his wife, the late Miss Dixie, Tom T. Hall is a member of the International Bluegrass Hall of Fame.  A native of Olive Hill, Kentucky, Tom T. Hall was part of a Bluegrass band in his youth, but made his living, of course, as a songwriter and performer of mainstream country music in the 1960s through the 1990s.  After he retired from his Country Music Hall of Fame-earning career, though, Tom T. combined with Miss Dixie devoted much of their time and talents to writing Bluegrass songs, and promoted having these songs recorded by Bluegrass performers.  Many bands have recorded songs written by or co-written by Tom T. Hall, and we spent our entire second hour listening to a few of those songs by performers as varied as Charlie Sizemore, Josh Williams, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Gibson Brothers, Longview, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, the Spinney Brothers, and Jimmy Martin, just to name a few.

The show started with a belated birthday celebration of another member of both the Country Music and Bluegrass Music Halls of Fame:  Mac Wiseman (May 23, 1925 - February 25, 2019).  We always enjoy sharing music from The Voice With A Heart.

There wasn't that much new music to share this week, but we did share a new song from the Edgar Loudermilk Band, as well as a tune from Troy Engle's new record devoted to the music he co-wrote with Tom T. and Dixie Hall.  In addition, we included two more songs from the great new Rebel recording from the super-traditional band known as High Fidelity.  Their "Banjo Player's Blues" is a dandy, and we'll be hearing lots more from it in future broadcasts.

Hope you all are doing well.  Don't forget to send us an email (bgcafe@gmail.com) or visit our Facebook page, if you're so inclined.

Take good care, and stay healthy!

Amy O.
