"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/27/2013 - Gordon Pike & Darlene Champagne

Hi Folks.
Earl Pike, Darlene Champagne, Connie Smith, Fred Pike
Gordon Pike and Darlene Champagne

The centerpiece of this show was an interview, along with relevant music, of Gordon Pike and Darlene Champagne, both of whom grew up playing and recording with The Pike Brothers or The Pike Family & The Pine Hill Ranchers in Eastern Connecticut in the 1960s and 1970s.

In our usual fashion, we brought a good number of new songs to the show along with some classic and rare gems.  The new included music from NewTown, Reno & Harrell, Little Roy Lewis and Lizzy Long, WMD Bluegrass Band from Colorado, the incredible banjo picker Tim Weed, Junior Sisk and Joe Mullins, Mark Newton & Steve Thomas, Terry Baucom, and Alex Leach.

Our Heritage Corner music was supplied by Ralph Stanley from the period when Sammy Adkins was his lead singer, Carl Story, Fred Pike & Al Hawkes, The Country PardnersThe Carter Family, Jimmie Williams & Red Ellis, and The Lilly Brothers & Don Stover.

Wyatt, Jon, Jackson, & Luke Weiland, and Sam Wachtler on guitar

Listeners also got a chance to hear my father tell a story that was recorded 19 years ago about a "musical" event that occurred in his youth during WW2 in North Carolina.  Let's just say when the man says "dance faster" you should probably head for the door!  My dad celebrated his 87th birthday on this day.

Amy will be back next week, so be sure to tune in!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/20/2013

Sunday's show was a special one for a couple of different reasons:  we remembered the 100th birthday of Louis Marshall "Grandpa" Jones with a good bit of his music; we shared new music from wonderful new projects by Edgar Loudermilk and the duo of Junior Sisk & Joe Mullins; and we visited with the Queen of Bluegrass, Rhonda Vincent.  That's a lot of stuff to cram into just three hours, but I think we were able to get it all in...

On my reading list:  the Grandpa Jones autobiography
published in 1984 and co-authored by noted
country music historian, Charles K. Wolfe.
First up, we included five songs that were either written or performed by the one and only Grandpa Jones, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday on October 20th.  While the man who was given his "Grandpa" moniker at the ripe old age of 22 wasn't exactly a Bluegrass performer, the influence of this Country Music Hall of Famer is felt even today, fifteen years after his passing in 1998.  In addition to hearing Grandpa singing three of his classic songs, including his best-known composition, "Eight More Miles To Louisville," we also heard two more of his songs performed by Norman Blake & Tony Rice as well as Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Another reading list selection from 2013 and Murphy Hicks Henry.
No surprise, there's a separate chapter featuring Rhonda Vincent.
The hard-working, super-busy Rhonda Vincent will be performing in Hamden, Connecticut this coming Saturday, and we enjoyed visiting with her a bit on the telephone during Sunday's show.  Rhonda told us about her newest project, as well as her upcoming recording (called "Only Me") to be released on January 28, 2014, and how she gets to host her own radio show on 650AM/WSM in Nashville on the last Thursday of each month.  Very cool!  Rhonda & the Rage will play a show for GuitarTown CT Productions on Saturday, October 26th at the Unitarian Society Hall.  For more info on the show, click here, and if you're curious to know what's going on in the busy life of Rhonda Vincent, click here.  Big thanks to show promoter Chris Wuerth for allowing us to give away a couple of tickets to Rhonda's show next week, too!

There was a little bit of new music to share from a couple of great new recordings, too:  Edgar Loudermilk's second solo recording from Mountain Fever Records, "My Big Chance Tomorrow," and a traditional recording of Bluegrass covers from the reigning IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year, Junior Sisk, along with his Rebel Records labelmate, Joe Mullins.  Their joint recording venture is called "Hall Of Fame Bluegrass!"  It's always great to hear and share new music, especially when it's top-notch quality like these two projects.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard on Sunday's show, and that you'll make it a point to join Jim for another fun edition of Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon.

Have a good week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 10/13/2013 Jim Shumate, Mark Newton & Steve Thomas

Hi Folks.

Jim Shumate in 1980
This show revolved around two key events, one being the loss of pioneering first generation bluegrass fiddler Jim Shumate  (Oct. 21, 1921 - Oct. 10, 2013,) and the other being a live interview with Mark Newton and Steve Thomas -- veteran bluegrassers with very long resumes who have released a collaborative album titled "Reborn."

Flatt & Scruggs' first band
Jim Shumate is on fiddle
We played a couple of classic cuts from Flatt & Scruggs' first recording session that had Jim Shumate on fiddle, and throughout the show we played fiddle tunes from Jim's 1980 fiddle album "Bluegrass Fiddle Supreme."

We also played music from many of Mark Newton's past projects along with songs from his and Steve Thomas' album "Reborn."

Check out their video for "Old McDonald Sold The Farm":

Other newer music included selections from a new album from Jeff Scroggins & Colorado, Noam Pikelny's excellent new Kenny Baker tribute album, Alex Leach, Larry Efaw & The Bluegrass Mountaineers, James King's new album of country songs done bluegrass style (as well as an oldie from one of James' 1988 LPs), Del & Dawg (Del McCoury and David Grisman), Peter Rowan, Locust Ridge, Lou Reid and Carolina, Kim Robins, and Don Rigsby.

Besides the Flatt & Scruggs and James King oldies, The Heritage Corner included old recordings from Charlie MooreJimmie Williams & Red Ellis, and Doc Watson.

Don't miss James & Cathy Ward on Thursday afternoon with their program, "Bluegrass Rules," when they will bring you the rebroadcast of the 2013 IBMA Awards Show.

Amy will be with you next Sunday, so be sure to tune in.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/6/2013

While I was really only gone from the WHUS airwaves for about three weeks, it seems to me like it has been a bit longer than that.  With so much brand new music to play, the show could have easily been an hour or two longer, but we still were able to squeeze in most of the music we picked out for today.  Hope you enjoyed it...

Always fun to see the Gibsons win awards!
The show started with several folks who took home IBMA Awards at the ceremonies held in Raleigh, NC on September 26th, both yearly achievement awards (Balsam Range for Album of the Year; Claire Lynch and Junior Sisk as Female & Male Artists, respectively; the Gibson Brothers for Entertainer, Vocal Group, Songwriter for Eric Gibson, and Song of the Year for "They Called It Music") and entrance into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame (for Tony Rice, as well as the terrific fiddler for the Foggy Mountain Boys, the late Paul Warren).  Congratulations to all of the winners!

October 6th seems to be a big day to celebrate birthdays in the World of Bluegrass, as we played several songs from birthday celebrants today, including Terry Baucom, Ray Deaton, Johnny Williams, Julie Venne Hogan of BearTracks, and Connecticut's Dick Bowden.  Happy Birthday to each of them!

As always, there was a really healthy portion of brand new music to share, and we were able to do that by playing songs from new or forthcoming projects by the Del McCoury Band, James King, Junior Sisk & Joe Mullins, Noam Pikelny, Lou Reid & Carolina, and the Missy Werner Band.  What a great haul -- you'll be hearing a whole lot more from all of these projects in future weeks of the show.

Hope you enjoyed the show today, and be sure to join Jim next Sunday for another edition of "Bluegrass Cafe."

Enjoy the week!

Amy
