"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/30/2006

Today's show included a brief conversation with a very busy man -- Roger Moss, Manager of the Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival. This festival is coming up at the end of this week -- August 3-6 -- and is held at Martin Park in East Hartford, CT. For folks who've never ventured to Podunk because they think it's in "too urban" an area, you really ought to try to make it there for at least a day or two this year. The lineup is terrific (example: Rhonda AND Del will both be performing on Friday), and the location is very, very easy to find (even for those of us country folks who don't venture to the "big city" all that often). There is camping available, activities for the kids, and -- obviously -- lots of terrific music. Check out Podunk, if you can, and make sure you stop by the WHUS tent when you're there. Marti, Jim, Myrna, and I would love to see you!

Bluegrass at Buttery Brook Park - Saturday, July 22nd

Don't forget -- tomorrow is Bluegrass at Buttery Brook Park in South Hadley, MA. Dave Helman (the force behind the very successful Country Corner Coffee House series from October-April, and host of "Country Corner" on WTCC, Springfield) puts this one-day festival together, and he's got a terrific lineup for this year. Performers will include Connecticut's great traditional group, TrueGrass, the ever-popular Hunger Mountain Boys, a bit of western swing from the Westernaires, and Rhode Island's Mike Boulay & Down the Road. As the headliner, you'll find Massachusetts-native David Peterson & 1946. Listeners of the "BG Cafe" may have heard Dave speaking a couple of weeks ago about how excited he is to be playing in his home state, so come out and see him and his terrific band. The music starts at 10AM and runs through 7PM. Buttery Brook Park is located on Route 33 in South Hadley, MA. The weather forecast calls for only a slight chance of a thunderstorm toward evening, and temps. in the 80s. If you'd like to see the flyer, or need directions on how to find the park, click here.

This should be a terrific festival. We'll see you there!

Incorrect email address to submit questions...

Oops! Guess we know that items on this blog are posted by humans, as I only discovered today that I gave an incorrect email address to which you could/should email questions you'd like to ask Eric Gibson when we talk to him on the "BG Cafe" on Sunday, July 23rd. Sorry for the mix-up, folks.

Anyhow, if you want to email a question for us to ask Eric, here's the correct address: bgcaferequests@yahoo.com.

Tune in to the "Bluegrass Cafe" each and every Sunday from 4:00-7:00PM EST. If you live in southern New England, you may be able to listen to us via the radio airwaves at 91.7FM. If you prefer to listen online, that's an option, too. We can be found at www.whus.org. We'll start talking to Eric a bit after 5PM. Join us, please, won't you?

So many festivals in August...

In addition to the wonderful Podunk BG Festival (East Hartford, CT) to start off the month of August, and the Thomas Point Beach BG Festival (Brunswick, ME) to finish it, there are a couple other festivals in the region that you might want to try out this year:

From August 11-13 is the 5th annual Lake Champlain Bluegrass Festival in Alburgh, VT. This festival features a big lineup, including the legendary Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys (Friday only), and a pair of bands which have both won the International Bluegrass Music Association's Emerging Artist of the Year award, the Gibson Brothers and King Wilkie (both bands - Saturday only). There will also be a host of regional bands, including Southern Rail, Gopher Broke, the Atkinson Family Band, the New England Bluegrass Band, Freewheelin', and Yonder Hill (from Canada). Other festival features include a $3,000 fiddle & banjo contest, a craft show, hayrides, workshops, and more. If you'd like more information, send email to info@lakechamplainmusic.com or call (802)482-8110.

Running from August 24th through the 27th is something called Pickin' In The Pasture in Lodi, NY. This festival claims to be the "largest traditional bluegrass festival in the state," and that doesn't seem to be far off the mark, based on their lineup for 2006. Performers on the bill include: the Lewis Family, the James King Band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, the Special Consensus, David Parmley & Continental Divide, Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Grascals, David Peterson & 1946, and BlueRidge, as well as Smokey Greene, Freewheelin', Chester Johnson & the Foggy Mountain Grass, and Seneca County Bluegrass. Although the Finger Lakes region of New York is not exactly a stone's throw from eastern CT, this looks like a festival that just may be too good to miss. If you'd like to make plans to be there, send email to alex11@capital.net or call (607)582-6363.

Play List for "Bluegrass Cafe" 7/16/2006

It was a fun day with Marti and I hosting the Red Rooster Party first, and then going straight into the Bluegrass Cafe. Myrna was back from vacation and everything was running pretty smoothly. We got many requests and were able to play most. I hadn't heard Charlie Moore lately, so I made sure we played a couple of his songs. In the last hour I went back to the early 1950s for a set of songs from Jim Eanes, Jimmy Martin and the Osborne Brothers, and an obscure Mississippi bluegrass band by the name of the Hodges Brothers. Hope you enjoyed. Jim

Eric Gibson on the "BG Cafe" - Sunday, July 23rd

On Sunday, July 23rd, the elder Gibson brother, Eric, will be joining us via the phone. As you may know, the Gibson Brothers have long been favorites of CT Bluegrass fans, and so, they're likely to see plenty of friends when they make an appearance at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford on Saturday, August 5th. Eric's been on the air with us at the Bluegrass Cafe a couple of times -- we never know what to expect, but it's always an entertaining time. The Gibsons are doing extremely well, both on and off the stage. Their latest Sugar Hill recording, Red Letter Day, is currently #1 on the National Bluegrass Survey Albums Chart for the month of July, and the song "Red Letter Day" is #3 on the Song Chart. Will it be another #1 tune for the Gibsons? We'll see...

Off the stage, there has been a recent addition to the Gibson family: younger brother Leigh and his wife, Allison, welcomed Annie Gray Gibson to the fold on July 1st. Our best wishes to the whole family!

If you have any questions for Eric, feel free to email them to us sometime before July 23rd at bgcaferequests@yahoo.com. Then, tune in to the show on July 23rd and we'll see what Eric has to say.

Of course, tune in this Sunday, as well. Jim & Marti will keep you entertained with some great tunes, I'm sure.

Amy

Cathy (Bumgarner) Day's BG bio

Time to catch up with another alum of The Magic Of Bluegrass. This time around, it's Cathy Day...

My father, Carroll Bumgarner, is from rural North Carolina, in the Smokey Mountains and grew up in a large family where most everyone played old time fiddle, banjo, and bluegrass music. In fact, his father was a fiddler who once filled in with Bill Monroe and was asked to join his band. As a father of four, my grandfather declined. He fiddled because he father did, too; in fact, he made fiddles in the mountains. So, that makes me a fourth generation fiddler.

I became interested in learning myself after seeing the Johnson Mountain Boys perform when I was about 9 years old. I started guitar lessons with Mike Kropp and continued for one year. I then got bored with rhythm guitar, so I took up every instrument in the house, from piano, bass, mandolin, and fiddle, to banjo and dobro, plus, started singing. When I was 12, I became serious with the fiddle, and was allowed to play that instrument primarily when performing with our family band. By that time, we had been performing as the Bumgarner Family with my mother, Maryann on bass, sister Cheryl on banjo, and my father Carroll on guitar and vocals. The band was playing local churches and nursing homes, and a few festivals here and there. At about age 13, the band was more balanced, having 3 lead instruments (Dad always took breaks on the guitar), and more vocal variety (everyone sang instead of just Dad by now). During my high school years, we changed the name to the Rose City Bluegrass Band when Cheryl's future husband, Jim Plecan, joined on mandolin and vocals. We thought it was a good name with Norwich (our place of residence) being the "Rose of New England" and also called the "Rose City."

During high school, I filled in with local acts like Shady Creek, did some recording for folk singers such as Patrick McGinnly, and took the community radio course at UCONN and joined WHUS in 1990. Plus, I entered fiddle contests every chance I got.

In college joined a female band called, "SassyGrass," a female band whose members included the likes of Suzi Gibson and Betsy Rome. The band played a lot around New England and won the Northeast regional Pizza Hut/IBMA sponsored bluegrass band competition in Boston. This brought us to the final competition in Owensboro in 1991, where we placed 3rd.

I could not juggle the band and the radio with the seriousness and importance of pharmacy school. As I entered the professional portion of pharmacy school, I first gave up the band. A year later, I left my spot at WHUS and became an as-needed disc jockey. Now and then, you would hear me on certain public service announcements, doing news and weather, and covering different shows like World Music (I could always throw some Russian Bluegrass in there!).

I graduated from UCONN in 1995, got married to Keegan Day, and started working in retail pharmacy as a pharmacist and manager of a chain pharmacy. I picked up music again, mostly in the form of session work. Musically, there has been quite some variety, playing on church worship teams, different bands like Marcy Hill (including Gary Skillings) from New Hampshire, Blackstone Valley from Massachusetts (with brothers Dave and Bob Dick), and even Irish Music with Peter Lange's "Cashel Rock."

My most exciting session work was released in June 2006. I played for CMH's Picking On the Red Hot Chili Peppers project. The title is "Pick My Kiss - A bluegrass tribute to the Red Hot Chili Peppers." Other artists on the project include Roger Williams, Dave Dick to name a few.

Mostly, my main focus these days is on my family and church life. Keegan and I have a beautiful 4 year old, Keegan III. His boundless energy keeps us on our toes. He is very musical, and started carrying a tune when he was one year old. He has rhythm, too. But, we have not started any formal training yet.

The future will have us back to attending festivals, performing here and there with other groups, and someday, I will record my own work and compositions with some of my favorite New England for backup.

David Peterson on the "BG Cafe" - Sunday, July 9th

This Sunday, Massachusetts native David Peterson will join us via the phone on the "Bluegrass Cafe." Mr. Peterson and his band, 1946, will be making a rare appearance in the area when they perform at Dave Helman's Bluegrass at Buttery Brook Park in South Hadley, MA on Saturday, July 22nd. The current recording from this group - In The Mountaintops To Roam -- is, put simply, quite excellent. If you like traditional Bluegrass, this CD is loaded with some great tunes, including covers of a couple of Mac Wiseman gems, "I'll Still Write Your Name In The Sand" and "Bluebirds Are Singing For Me," as well as versions of Hank Snow's "Golden Rocket," and Bill Monroe's "You'll Find Her Name Written There." In addition to those songs, there are a few originals, as well, including a tune I am especially fond of, "1946." Obviously, I'm not the only BG radio-type who likes this song, though, as the tune is making its way up the National Bluegrass Survey in good form (#16 in the July issue of Bluegrass Unlimited). After all, what is there not to like about a song that mentions both Fenway Park and Ted Williams?

Join us this Sunday on the "Bluegrass Cafe." The show itself airs from 4:00-7:00PM, but we'll start our chat with Dave sometime between 5:00 and 5:15PM.
