Playlist - 6/26/2016 - Ralph Stanley

Hi Folks.

This show was one of the most difficult to do in the eleven years I've been on the air.  My greatest inspiration in bluegrass music and especially the old mountain style of music, Dr. Ralph Stanley, died at his home in southwest Virginia Thursday evening, June 23rd.  His funeral was held at the site of the Hills of Home Festival near McClure, Virginia, Tuesday evening June 28.

Jim and Ralph  c1993
A great many articles, remembrances, obituaries, and videos about Ralph and The Stanley Brothers covered the press and the internet for days after Ralph's passing.  I decided to let the music do the talking on this special Bluegrass Cafe, and every song I played had Ralph Stanley as a participant.  I have never done anything like that on the show before, and it resulted in 62 songs in three hours celebrating the life and music of Ralph Stanley.

I'll make one comment:  When I was a kid North Carolina in the 1960s, I recall becoming aware of Ralph Stanley from radio broadcasts that my dad would have on in the mornings. My impression of Ralph was that he was a giant among men.   I didn't meet Ralph in person until many years later, and I was shocked at his relatively short stature -- nothing like I had imagined.  In spite of that, he will always be a giant in my mind.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/19/2016

Happy Father's Day to all (including to my father,
Alton Orlomoski)!
Sunday's show was just plain packed!  We had songs for Father's Day (of course!), plenty of songs from the songbook of one Lester Raymond Flatt (born June 19, 1914), and we even had a visit with an in-studio visitor.  Phew!

Our Father's Day selections included both songs about fathers and fatherhood, and selections by bands which include Bluegrass dads and their offspring.  In some cases, the song selections fit both categories.  Hope all of the fathers enjoyed their special day today!

To me, it seems like it would be incredibly inappropriate to NOT play the music of Lester Flatt every week on our Bluegrass Cafe.  To that end, we shared several selections from Lester on Sunday, as it would have been his 102nd birthday.  What better excuse does one need?

Recorded in 1965, this album is a must for
fans of New England Bluegrass
Mark Wayne at WHUS,
6/19/2016.
In the middle of the show, we enjoyed an hour-long visit with the one and only Mark Wayne.  If you've been a listener of southern New England-originated Bluegrass over the past 50+ years, you may have heard Mark playing bass and singing with his "beautiful baritone voice" on the 1965 Osage Records recording by Fred Pike, Bill Rawlings & the Twin River Boys:  "Genuine Authentic Bluegrass Folk Music."  My brother, Dave, often played this record around the house as I was growing up, and later, I listened to Mark Wayne on the radio at WCTY in Norwich.  We talked about Mark's involvement with the Twin River Boys, as well as a bit of his radio career and a few adventures.  Hope you enjoyed listening to the show, and big thanks to Mark for joining us!

Forgot to mention on-air, but I'll be doing a Tuesday morning fill-in this week (June 20th) from 8-10AM.  If you'd like to join me for what will probably be a bunch of classic country music and a bit of Bluegrass, please do!  If you're only interested in hearing Bluegrass, be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's edition of Bluegrass Cafe!

Have a good week!

Amy

Playlist - 6/12/2016 - Penny Parsons & Curly Seckler

Hi Folks.

We had the honor of interviewing Penny Parsons, North Carolina author of the new biography titled .

"Foggy Mountain Troubadour - The Life and Music of Curly Seckler."  The book was just published in May by University of Illinois Press and is available at most book sources, or from Curly Seckler's web page here

Penny researched the book for more than 12 years, and the result is an excellent addition to the bluegrass library that fills in many of the blanks about the early days of bluegrass, what it was like to be a old-time or bluegrass musician in the first half of the 20th century, and of course the history of Curly with Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs, and the Foggy Mountain Boys -- a gig that led to Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass, and eventually Curly Seckler and the Nashville Grass.  This is a must-have book for your collection.

You can hear the interview at this --> link.

The rest of the playlist is below.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/5/2016

Sunday afternoon's radio show began with songs from several folks who celebrate birthdays in the week starting June 5th and running through June 9th.  Generally, we put our Birthday Spotlight later in the program, but we had so much new music to share this week, we figured we'd try to get the birthdays in early in the program.

Coming July 2016 -- the second recording from the
award-winning Earls Of Leicester,
As for new music, there was a whole lot of it -- both from newish recordings that we've recently received and also, songs from recordings that will be released later this year.  Among the new were songs from the Earls Of Leicester, Volume Five, the Dauphinais Brothers, the Lonely Heartstring Band, Lorraine Jordan, the Gospel Plowboys, Irene Kelley, Bryan Sutton, and New York State native, Aaron "Frosty" Foster.  In addition, there was recent music from Jeff White, the Rice & Menzone Alliance, the Spinney Brothers, Edgar Loudermilk, the Del McCoury Band, the Boxcars, and the Special Consensus.

A must-read for those interested
in the history of Bluegrass.
With the publication of the new Curly Seckler biography (Foggy Mountain Troubadour:  The Life And Music Of Curly Seckler by Penny Parsons), we shared a tiny bit of Curly's music.  If you're looking for a very detailed story of a Bluegrass legend to add to your summer reading list, by all means, add this fine biography.

Big thanks for joining us for Sunday's show!  Hope you'll be able to join Jim next Sunday afternoon for three more big hours of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Enjoy the week!

Amy O.
