A BG & classic country fill-in....

As it's the beginning of the semester at UCONN, there are plenty of opportunities to do fill-ins on the radio until the schedule changes in the middle of September. Today, I was scheduled to do a midday fill-in, so I figured I'd play a mix of classic country tunes and BG for two hours. Well, two hours turned into four, and so I was "forced" to keep playing that mix. I won't lie -- this was great fun! And judging from the number of positive calls we received about the tunes we were playing, I think there is an audience for those classic country sounds. Wouldn't it be terrific to hear folks like Hank Williams, Roy Acuff, Carl Smith, and Ray Price on the air more often? I think so....

Today's show playlist follows, and the requests are in red.

Be sure to tune in on Sunday starting at 2PM -- Jim & Marti may include some classic country in their fine "Red Rooster Party," and then, Jim has the helm at this week's "BG Cafe." Be listening!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/24/2008

Another week -- more great music at the BG Cafe!

This week's show included new music from the likes of Cherryholmes ("Don't Believe" on Skaggs Family), Ralph Stanley II (Lonesome Day's "This One Is II"), and luthier Audey Ratliff (his self-released "Piece Of Cake"), as well as a brief look at a couple of nominees for IBMA Awards which will be given out in ceremonies in Nashville on October 2nd. For a full list of nominees for this year's awards, click here.

One of the nominees in the category of "Recorded Event of the Year" is someone to whom many New Englanders credit their first exposure to Bluegrass -- 84-year-old Everett Lilly. Beginning in 1952, Everett, his brother "B" Lilly, and banjo picker Don Stover began playing Bluegrass in Boston, most notably at the Hillbilly Ranch. Their sound is credited with inspiring many a BG picker from this part of the country, including Joe Val, Peter Rowan, Bill Keith, and countless others. Everett's latest recording -- "Everett Lilly & Everybody And Their Brother" -- includes Everett playing and singing with lots and lots of his friends and family, including Marty Stuart, Rhonda Vincent, Ronnie & Rob McCoury, Eddie Stubbs, and others. You'll be sure to hear more from this CD in future weeks on BG Cafe.

I'm off for Maine this Labor Day weekend for the final Thomas Point Beach BG Festival. Hope you get to enjoy some great BG music wherever you are. Be sure to join Jim on for Sunday's show at 4PM...

Thanks for listening -
Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/17/2008

Hi Folks,

This Sunday was fun-filled with new music, and we have quite a bit of new music to bring you in the coming weeks. Some of the highlights included several new singles from the Rural Rhythm label including new music from Rickey Wasson (from J.D. Crowe's band), Lonesome River Band, The Crowe Brothers, and Jim Van Cleve. We also debuted a new CD from Jerry Douglas (with help from Earl Scruggs and Tony Rice) that has been released on the Koch label

We also aired an interview with Chris West of Blue Moon Rising (photo at left) that was recorded at Podunk Bluegrass Festival 2 August 2008 just after their new CD was released. Of course we played a couple of tracks from the CD.

Forget what I said about your DJ next week -- the real story is that Amy will be back.

Thanks for supporting bluegrass music in New England!

Jim

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/10/2008

Compared to last Sunday's show, this Sunday's BG Cafe was pretty uneventful (i.e. no live music or guests). However, that left us plenty of time to play LOTS of music.

Our playlist is full of the usual mix of old and new, as well as music from several regional bands, including the Hunger Mountain Boys, GrassRoutes, ShoreGrass, Bear Bridge Band, Back Eddy Bluegrass, and the Bristol Boys. In addition, we played a couple of tunes from the brand new duet recording from Valerie Smith & Becky Buller called, "Here's A Little Song..." One of the tunes on this new recording -- "I Got A Letter" -- was penned by a fine New England songwriter, Robert Fraker, of the Bear Bridge Band and Old Time Bluegrass Singers, so you know we just had to include that tune in our Sunday programming.

The memorial service for Matt Nozzolio was held on Saturday in Middletown, and it was full of all kinds of music -- from Mexican to Bluegrass to folk to old-time country -- all types of music that had been performed by Matt. We closed the show with a tune that was sung at the end of Matt's memorial, "Farther Along."

Hope you enjoyed something you heard somewhere along the way. Do make sure to join Jim & Marti next Sunday in the BG Cafe.

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/3/2008

Sunday's show was an extra-special treat for Jim and I, as we got to welcome to our studio Cody Shuler & Pine Mountain Railroad. These guys came to Storrs directly from their fabulous gospel set at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in East Hartford, where they got a tremendous response from the audience. We were very happy and honored to have them with us at WHUS, and were treated to two live tunes from their brand new Rural Rhythm gospel CD, "Pickin', Praisin' & Singin' : Hymns From The Mountain." We talked a bit about the record, and, of course, played several tunes on this very fine CD. Rest assured you'll be hearing plenty more from this disc in future weeks and months at the Bluegrass Cafe. Thanks to Cody, Bill, Jerry, Matt, and Dale for stopping by and visiting us at WHUS, and we look forward to seeing you once again in New England...hopefully very soon!

On a somber note, we also featured a bit of music from our Dobro-playing friend, Matt Nozzolio, who died on Saturday after suffering a massive heart attack. The Bristol Boys' debut CD, "All Aboard With The Bristol Boys" was just released around the middle of July, and we featured a couple of tracks from the disc on Sunday's show, as well as some of Matt's earlier work with Charter Oak Bluegrass.

We hope you enjoyed Sunday's show, and I'll be with you again this Sunday, August 10th, as Jim & Marti will be out of town. If you like listening to classic country music, tune in to Jim & Marti's Red Rooster Party this Sunday at 2PM, as well, as I'll be playing lots of those great old tunes before BG Cafe starts at 4PM.

See you then -
Amy

Matt Nozzolio, RIP

As you may have heard, the Connecticut and New England Bluegrass community lost a dear friend on Saturday. Matt Nozzolio (shown here performing on the Dobro with the Bristol Boys at the Buttery Brook Bluegrass Festival on July 19th) was a musician, period. He played his music -- be it the Dobro (in his words, "the easiest Bluegrass instrument to learn") or the accordion whenever and wherever he could. Matt toured Europe as a member of Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters in the 1990s, was an original member of the Charter Oak Bluegrass Band, and most recently, could be seen performing at Bluegrass festivals with the old-time country music trio, the Bristol Boys.

Cards of condolence can be sent to Matt's wife, Jean:
Jean Wertz
21 Park Place
Middletown, CT 06457

or you can post a note on Matt's MySpace page.

In short, Matt was a great guy, and he will be sorely missed.

(Information updated 8/5/2008: Details about Matt's memorial services are now available. Calling hours are Friday, 6-9PM at the Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown CT. Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 9AM at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown.
