"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/25/2016

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we shared a full three hours filled with everything from classic Bluegrass to music from the latest country singer to "go Bluegrass" to a few songs in tribute to one of the Grand Ladies of the Grand Ole Opry.  Hope you were able to join us!

Jean Shepard
 (November 21, 1933 - September 25, 2016)
Though Jean Shepard was never a "Bluegrass Singer," she was a deserving 2011 inductee into the Country Music Hall of Fame, as well as a 60+ year member of the Grand Ole Opry.  Her passing this morning (September 25, 2016) inspired me to dig out a couple of tracks featuring Jean singing two of her hits, as well as a Bluegrass version of a big 1973 record for Jean Shepard, "Slippin' Away."  Click the link to read a fine memorial piece by Juli Thanki in today's Tennessean newspaper to learn more about this legendary singer.

For something different, I used the inspiration of my iPod set on "shuffle" this week to pick out a few songs to share during Sunday's radio show.  Those selections came to us from several performers, including the New Kentucky Colonels, the Feinberg Brothers, Bob Amos, the Stanley Brothers, David Peterson, the Bluegrass Patriots, and the Seldom Scene.  I may return to that method of playlist "generation" over the next few weeks.  We shall see...

A bit of newer music hit the airwaves today, too.  We shared a song from Dwight Yoakam's new "Bluegrass" recording from Rounder Records -- "Swimmin' Pools, Movie Stars..." -- as well as songs from several other 2016 records by Aaron Foster, the Spinney Brothers, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, ClayBank, Edgar Loudermilk, the Boxcars, the Gospel Plowboys, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, and the Earls Of Leicester.

Hope you all had a most excellent weekend, and we'll be looking for you again next Sunday!

Enjoy the week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/18/2016

During last Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we played more than an hour's worth of songs from the Bill Monroe Songbook, as Big Mon would have celebrated his 105th birthday on September 13th.  During today's radio program, we devoted nearly twenty songs to a bona fide Country Music -- more accurately, just MUSIC -- legend, Hank Williams.  "The Lovesick Blues Boy" (so dubbed by the late Red Foley as Hank was introduced on the Grand Ole Opry in 1949) would have celebrated his 93rd birthday on September 17th.  That seems as good of a reason as any to share so much Hank music, as if an excuse is really needed.  Some music legends just completely transcend genre, and Hank Williams was certainly one of those performers.  We heard a little bit from Hank, himself, but mostly, we shared a whole bunch of Hank covers from the Bluegrass World.

Incidentally, if you are not overly familiar with the life and legend of Hank Williams, you may wish to check out one or both of these Hank biographies:  Hank Williams:  The Biography by Colin Escott and Lovesick Blues:  The Story Of Hank Williams by Paul Hemphill.  The Escott book served as the source material for the 2016 biopic of Hank's life called "I Saw The Light" (although, like most movies, the book was 1,000% better than the movie adaptation).

We celebrated a couple of Bluegrass birthdays this week, too, including selections from the late Bill Harrell (born September 14, 1934), as well as from Kathy Kallick (born September 19, 1952) and Shawn Lane of Blue Highway (born September 21, 1971).

Hope you enjoyed today's radio show, and that you will consider joining me once again next Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/11/2016

Our primary focus on Sunday afternoon was the music of the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe (September 13, 1911 - September 9, 1996).  In addition to playing 30 songs from the Monroe Songbook, we also opened the show opened with five of the many songs which have been written in tribute to Bill Monroe and his music.  It would be interesting to make a list of the many tribute songs that have been written about Monroe in the twenty years since his death, but that's another project for another day.

Bill Monroe wasn't the only birthday celebrant being honored this week.  We remembered two other performers who have September birthdays:  Paul Adkins (September 9, 1952) and Lou Reid (September 13, 1955).

Hope you enjoyed your lovely September Sunday, and we'll be looking for you again our Bluegrass Cafe next week at 4PM.

Have a good week!

Amy

Playlist - 9/4/2016

Hi Folks.

I'm taking more of a backseat role on Bluegrass Cafe to provide more time for other things I've overlooked for over a decade while doing the show.  While I am still fully engaged with Red Rooster Party, Amy is prime on BG Cafe and I'll occasionally do fill-ins. The Labor Day weekend was one of those occasions.

It's been a while since I played Jim Eanes on the show, so I made an effort to correct that oversight on this show by playing some Jim Eanes vinyl.  Many of the Jim Eanes recordings I played throughout the show were from my own vinyl and CD collection.

I also kicked off the show with Vic Jordan's most famous instrumental ("Pick Away") from the original vinyl LP, and played a rare early instrumental from Don Parmley.  We lost both of those great banjo pickers in the past month.

Check out the playlist below, and be sure to tune in Sunday 2-7pm ET when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.  You can join me for Red Rooster Party two hours prior to that when sports hasn't knocked us off.
