Bluegrass Cafe Playlist 3/25/2007 with Guest DJ William Trickett

Sunday was our first Bluegrass Cafe following two Sundays of WHUS Radiothon. Bluegrass Cafe listeners - YOU! - came through with wonderful support and helped us make our goal. Thank you very much. Bluegrass is alive and well in Southern New England!

We had Guest DJ, William Trickett, programming the second hour of the show with a little help from brother Benjamin. William's selections were well-received as evidenced by your phone calls. William's selections are indicated in Bold Red below. (William is the banjo player to the far right of Greg Cahill of Special Consensus in the first photo. Benjamin is the guitar player on the far left next to Justin Carbone in the second photo.)

The Kruger Brothers and Cherryholmes played UCONN's Jorgensen Center the previous Friday and Saturday, so we played several tunes from both.

Also, Marti and I had just returned from a week in North Carolina where we visited Mount Airy -- not only a music Mecca, but the home of Andy Griffith. It is also home to the Easter Brothers -- a legendary Bluegrass Gospel group -- so we played a couple of songs from their most recent recordings.

Thanks for listening.

Jim

Tater Tate needs your help.....

As you may have heard or read elsewhere, longtime Blue Grass Boy, Clarence "Tater" Tate is undergoing chemotherapy treatments for lung cancer. Tater started as a fiddle player with Bill Monroe in the late 1950s, left for a while, and then returned to the Blue Grass Boys in the mid-1980s and stayed on until Monroe's last performance in 1996. In addition to being a Blue Grass Boy, Tater also worked with Red Smiley & the Shenandoah Cut-ups, as well as Hylo Brown and with Lester Flatt & the Nashville Grass.

There will be a benefit concert to raise money for Tater's treatment on Sunday, April 15th in Bristol, VA. This should be a great show, as one of the features will be a Blue Grass Boys reunion, tentatively including former BGB's Bobby Hicks, Butch Robins, Wayne Lewis, Tom Ewing, Blake Williams, and others. For those of us who can't attend the benefit, there is still a way to contribute to the effort. If you'd like to help, send a check (payable to "Clarence Tate") to:

Raymond McLain
Bluegrass, Oldtime & Country Music Program
East Tennessee State Univ.
PO Box 70435
Johnson City, TN 37614-1704

Every little bit helps, and I'm sure will be much appreciated. If you can help Tater, or even if you just want to send a note with good wishes, please do.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/18/2007 & THANKS!!!

Well, I'm still a little in a state of disbelief, but thanks to all of our fabulous listeners, WE MADE IT!!! Last week, we told you that our two-week Radiothon show goal was $2,500, but after the first week, we had raised only $940. The confidence level was not high at the beginning of yesterday's show, I must confess. However, thanks to the eternal optimism (and enthusiasm!) of Marti, and some terrific last-minute callers, we ended up with a two-week show total of $2,530. Our listeners are definitely THE BEST, and we can't thank you enough. As we did last week, everything played on Sunday's show was available as a show premium (except the three songs marked in blue, which were requests). Jim & Marti are doing the show (with a special guest DJ during one hour) this Sunday, March 25th. Expect to hear plenty of requests and a whole lot less talk. On April 1st, I'll join you again, and as promised, I will be taking a vow of (almost) silence and playing plenty of music. We appreciate your patience with us over the last two weeks, and thanks again to everyone who helped us reach the big goal!!!!

Good news, bad news...

The good news: Radiothon will continue for the 3 hours of BG Cafe this week.
The bad news: Same thing.

For those of you who made a pledge last week to support WHUS during this year's Radiothon, thanks!! To those who haven't yet pledged, you've still got 3 more hours to call on Sunday from 4-7PM, and let us know you appreciate the music we play at BG Cafe.

To entice you a bit to make that call on Sunday -- toll free: 1-800-599-9487 -- we've secured a couple new CDs this week that may be quite appealing to you. At least one of these CDs hasn't even been released to the public yet, nor have we played it on the air at WHUS. You're going to like it, I assure you.....

Also, we'll have a couple pair of tickets to an upcoming show at UCONN featuring Cherryholmes and the Kruger Brothers. This show will be happening on Friday, March 23rd at 8PM at UCONN's Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts.

And here's one more reason for you to make a pledge this Sunday....we're going to offer our "Pledge for 1, Get 2" promotion for every pledge made (at least up to the first 50 calls we get, that is). The second CD you receive will be our choice, but it will be of the Bluegrass variety.

As mentioned earlier, the WHUS higher-ups set an ambitious show goal for us in 2007 of $2,500. We've got quite a long way to go on Sunday to reach that goal, but with your help......we might just get there (or, at least get a whole lot closer).....

THANKS!

Amy

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/11/2007

Well, we survived the first week of Radiothon at WHUS. Many thanks to each of you who took the time to call in and make a pledge (and get your choice of some pretty terrific BG CDs). We know it's not particularly enjoyable to tune in to listen to a show that's supposed to play music for 3 hours, and find that the radio folks are looking to you for some funds. The truth is that at WHUS, our engineers and operations board are always looking for ways to upgrade our equipment and our sound, and our studios are moving this summer into our new home in the Student Union at UCONN. All of this costs money, and we hope you value our BG programming enough to call in and make a pledge of support. For the past several years, the BG Cafe has been able to bring in a lot of money during Radiothon -- hence, our station-set "show goal" is pretty high this year. We have been asked to bring in $2,500 for 2 weeks of Radiothon. Our hope was to hit the halfway mark yesterday, but that just didn't happen. Did we come close? Yes, as I believe we nearly made it to $1,000. That is an awesome amount of money -- THANK YOU to everyone who pledged! Obviously, we'd like to get a bit closer to our ambitious goal of $2,500 next Sunday, but at this writing, there's still a chance that the show will be preempted for Women's NCAA Basketball action. We'll keep you posted. We appreciate your patience during Radiothon, and, of course, say thanks once again for supporting us in whatever way you can!

Our playlist for Sunday's show was drawn mostly from CDs available as premiums for Radiothon. The exception was the Stanley tune (a request promised to a loyal listener) and the opening "Katy Hill."

As we've mentioned on the air for the last couple of weeks, Radiothon begins at WHUS this Saturday, March 10th at 5AM and runs through Sunday, March 18th at 10PM. That means that for two Sundays -- any sports preemptions, notwithstanding -- we'll be conducting our own portion of Radiothon at Bluegrass Cafe. When we sent the word out to the various record labels and performers, we received many, many excellent CDs to offer you as "thank you gifts" when you make your pledge to Bluegrass Cafe. At this point, I'm not 100% sure of the pledge amount you will need to make to pick up one of the CD premiums, but as soon as I can confirm it, I'll let you know. If you see something in the list that's a "must have," please call early in the show to make your pledge this Sunday. While we really don't like "begging" our listeners for money, in another way, we do enjoy Radiothon, as it allows us to prove to WHUS that there are folks out there who faithfully listen to (and, we hope, appreciate) the Bluegrass Cafe. Thanks!!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 3/4/2007

Sunday's show got a delayed start, as the UCONN Women's Basketball team defeated the Univ. of South Florida in their 1st round of Big East tournament action. We got a few nice requests to play (noted in blue on the list), and we listened to a bit of music from the new CD called "Iron Shapens Iron" by some young Canadians, the Abrams Brothers. For the next two Sundays, WHUS and BG Cafe will be "celebrating" Radiothon -- the one time during the year where we ask you for a bit of financial support for the station. In the past couple of years, we've done extremely well; in fact, generally, our show brings in the second highest amount of pledge dollars of any music show that airs on WHUS (the polka show is #1). We've been accumulating a good number of great CDs to offer you as premiums -- we'll post a list of them later in the week, I promise. Please join Jim, Marti, and I on Sunday. If you choose to pledge or not, that decision is yours.....
