A (mostly) non-Bluegrass fill-in, 8/24/2012

As I'm writing this, Jim is playing all sorts of great BG music on the radio from some BG performers who are celebrating birthdays this week, including folks like the late Carter Stanley as well as banjo legend J.D. Crowe.  He'll be posting today's playlist later on this evening, no doubt, so keep your eyes open to find it...

This past Friday morning, I got to do what turns out to be my final fill-in show for the Summer at WHUS.  It was a fun, fast two hours, and since it was the first filler program I'd done since the death of Kitty Wells in July, I thought it would be quite fitting to play a bit of music from the Queen of Country Music.  As you most likely know, Kitty's biggest hit was 1952's "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels."  That song was an "answer song" to Hank Thompson's hit from the same year, "The Wild Side Of Life."  Answer songs were very popular in country music throughout the 1950s and into the 1960s, and it seems that Kitty Wells recorded at least two others others after having such great chart success with "...Angels."  We included those other answer songs from 1953 on Friday's show, as well as the two tunes they "answered" -- hits from Webb Pierce and Carl Smith.  Neither of those songs quite reached the popularity that "...Angels" hit, but they were -- and still are -- worth a listen from time to time.

Early Jim Reeves
August is a busy birthday month for quite a few of the classic country performers I like to spotlight in these fill-in shows, so I also made sure to play songs from a few of them:  Webb Pierce (born 8/8/1926), Porter Wagoner (8/12/1927), Buck Owens (8/12/1929), Jim Reeves (8/20/1924), Carter Stanley (8/27/1927), Kitty Wells (8/30/1919), and two of the Statler Brothers (baritone Phil Balsley born 8/8/1939 and bass Harold Reid on 8/21/1939).

Early 70s Statlers with Phil & Harold in front
Throw in a bit from the song catalog of the one and only Hank Williams -- a couple of songs sung by Hank, as well as a cover or three from others -- and you've got the kind of WHUS fill-in show that I really enjoy putting together a couple of times a year.

Hope you'll join us each and every Sunday at the BG Cafe on Sundays, 4-7PM, and we'll be sure to let you know when/if you'll find us on the air at other times throughout the year.  That info is generally found on our BG Cafe Facebook page, which can be looked at by anyone, regardless of whether or not they are Facebook members.  Find the show here:  www.facebook.com/WHUS.Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/19/2012

Howdy -

This was my second week in a row joining you at the BG Cafe, as Jim had another commitment this afternoon.  Even if we didn't receive any new recordings this week to play on the radio, we still had plenty of great music and information to share, so I'm hopeful you heard something you enjoyed somewhere along the way...

The big news in the BG world this week is that the final nominees for the 2012 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards were announced on Wednesday.  The awards will be handed out on Thursday, September 27th in ceremonies at the Ryman Auditorium during IBMA's annual World Of Bluegrass week.  Most of the nominees come as no surprise, but there are a couple of relatively (to me, anyway) notable absences.  The biggest nominee for 2012?  Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, with 9 overall nominations for band members individually and as a group.  On the show today, we played music from some of the actual nominees, as well as a couple of songs from performers we thought should have been remembered in this final round of nominations.  Better luck next year!  If you'd like to see the full list of 2012 nominees, click here.

In 2011, Doyle Lawson won a couple of IBMA Awards
with old pals, Paul Williams & J.D. Crowe.  In 2012, he's
going into the Hall of Fame!
Another big bit of news announced this week is that Doyle Lawson is going into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.  Is there a bigger honor in the BG world?  I can't really think of one.  Doyle Lawson has been an incredible bandleader, talent finder, musician, and singer in a professional career that spans 50+ years.  We shared just a little bit of Doyle's music today in his own band (Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver), as well as a track from his Country Gentlemen days, and a song from the Bluegrass Album Band.  Great stuff!

After last Sunday's show, I realized that I had somehow missed the fact last week that August 12th was the birthdate of one Alvis Edgar Owens, Jr.  Even though Buck Owens recorded a "Bluegrass" album in 1971 ("Ruby") and sometimes had a banjo-playing Buckaroo, the fact is that Buck was not a BG singer.  That fact, though, certainly hasn't stopped numerous BG performers from covering Buck Owens material over the years, so we always like to try to remember some of the country singers whose material is so BG-friendly.  Throughout Sunday's program, we included 10 Buck Owens songs recorded by some mighty fine BG performers (Buck songs in RED in the list that follows), including Lost & Found, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Terry Baucom with the Gibson Brothers, the Virginia Squires, Dailey & Vincent...even a live tune from Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys which featured Bill's daughter, Melissa, on the lead vocal.  No doubt, Buck's fun songs will continue to be covered in the BG world for years and years to come, and that is just fine with me.

While there wasn't any real "new" music to share on the show, there were still several songs from 2012 recording projects, including material by Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show, Bob Amos, the Boxcars, Lonesome River Band, the Spinney Brothers, Special Consensus, Audie Blaylock & Redline, and Kevin Richardson & Cuttin' Edge.

Be sure to join Jim in the BG Cafe for the next two Sundays, as I'm sure he'll have plenty of terrific music -- old and new -- to share.

The Spinney Brothers at Podunk -- 8/4/2012
Surprise!  It was another busy week at the BG Cafe, with most of the "busy-ness" happening behind the scenes.  If you listen to the show online, or have visited our WHUS website (www.whus.org), you probably know that we input our playlists into a computer as the show progresses, allowing the listener to see on their own computers what's playing.  It can be a bit challenging to engineer a radio show while simultaneously updating the computer with playlist info, finding music to play, and answering the phone, as necessary.  This week, there was an additional challenge, as we also had to do a periodical BMI tracking report, and that one was actually handwritten.  Yikes!

BG Hall of Famers Eddie Adcock & Tom Gray recount
stories of BG life "in the day," while Martha Adcock looks on
As Jim did last week in his post-Podunk program last Sunday, we featured a bit of music from some of the performers who entertained at the 17th annual Podunk Bluegrass Festival in Norwich.  It was a great festival (even if the August humidity might have been a bit over-the-top).  If you missed the festival...well, next year you just need to be at Dodd Stadium in Norwich for Podunk.  We played tunes on Sunday from a few Podunk performers, including the Special Consensus, Travers Chandler & Avery County, the Lonesome River Band, Eddie Adcock & Tom Gray, and the Spinney Brothers, as well as a song from the winners of the 2012 Podunk Band Competition:  Three Tall Pines.

Other music from newer releases that we played on Sunday's show came from projects by LRB's Randy Jones, Dailey & Vincent's Jeff Parker, Jimmy Gaudreau & Moondi Klein, Bob Amos, NightflyerBalsam Range, Town MountainChris Brashear, Paul Williams & the Victory Trio, Mickey Boles, and the Boxcars.  There was also a brand-spanking new recording on Mountain Fever Records from Kevin Richardson & Cuttin' Edge, and a song from a forthcoming project by a band that will be called American Drive (currently, 4/5 of the band are known as "The New South," as they'll continue to work with J.D. Crowe until his retirement comes at the end of 2012).

Earlene Pike with dad Earl (left) and uncle Fred, with
Sam Tidwell on bass, brother Gordon Pike with a drum,
and guitar picker, Dave Papuga -- early 1970s
We also took a few minutes today to remember a couple of folks with southern New England ties who are no longer with us.  Bluegrass Pioneer Sam Tidwell would have celebrated his 76th birthday on August 11th, so it seemed only proper to remember Sam with a song or two today.  Another singer no longer with us is Earlene Pike -- a young lady from northeastern CT who died on August 11, 1972, a couple of months before reaching her 19th birthday.  Earlene worked with her family band -- the Pike Brothers & the Pine Hill Ranchers -- and the family released at least three albums for Rebel Records in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard on the radio today, and that you'll be able to join me once again next Sunday for another edition of the BG Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 8/5/2012 - Podunk!

Hi Folks!

This was an action-packed week of fun, starting with the Podunk Bluegrass Festival at their new location at Dodd Stadium in Norwich CT.  Everyone was wondering how the new venue would work out, and a sampling of comments seemed to confirm the soundness of the move.  Camping space was plentiful, and concessions were more than adequate.  Dodd Stadium is reportedly the only ball park in the nation with a Ben & Jerry's ice cream vendor.  See more Podunk photos further down.
Dailey & Vincent at Podunk 8/3/2012
I worked the main stage at Podunk, so with the last act on the stage (The Spinney Brothers!), I hot-footed to the WHUS studio to present this program, and the timing was such that folks leaving the festival could tune in.  Of course I included many of the artists who performed at Podunk like Travers Chandler & Avery County, Jeff Parker, Lonesome River Band, The GrascalsDale Ann Bradley, NewTown, Eddie & Martha Adcock with Tom Gray, Randy Jones, Brandon Godman, and Merl Johnson.

Also on the program was a track from an old Earl Taylor LP given to me at Podunk by a listener.  We heard an early bluegrass version of Jim Reeves' "I've Lived A Lot In My Time."

New music was represented by the new Larry Gillis recording, "Ringing Of The Hammer," an all-gospel collection.  Larry was scheduled to play in Hartford at the Firebox on Sunday August 12th, but had to cancel for bus problems up north.  We hope to have Larry back soon.  He is always a big hit at the Firebox.

Amy will bring you the Bluegrass Cafe for the next two Sundays, so be sure to tune in to 91.7 FM in Eastern Connecticut, or http://whus.org everywhere else, for more great bluegrass.
