"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/24/2017

The Birthday Boy in 2015 as he played a few tunes
during his Bluegrass Hall of Fame induction.
During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we heard several selections from a Bluegrass Hall of Famer who celebrates his 70th birthday on September 25th:  Larry Sparks.

Just a little bit of new music to share on Sunday's show
We also shared a whole bunch of fine Bluegrass from 2017 recordings, several of which that were recently added to our WHUS Bluegrass library.  Among these songs were tunes from Bobby Osborne, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Mike Barnett, the Grascals, Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, Becky Buller, Gina Clowes, Feller & Hill, Flatt Lonesome, Big Country Bluegrass, Eddie Adcock, Nothin' Fancy, Tom Ewing, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass, and the Gibson Brothers.

Hope you enjoyed the show, and that you'll consider joining us once more next Sunday afternoon at 4PM for another visit to our Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/17/2017

Hiram King Williams
(September 17, 1923 - January 1, 1953)
It just so happened that Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe fell on the birth anniversary of one Hiram King Williams -- forever known to the music world as Hank Williams.  With that in mind, it seemed quite appropriate to share lots of music from the vast Hank Williams Songbook, and so, we did.  In addition to numerous Bluegrass covers of Hank tunes, we even included a couple of signature songs from ol' Hank, himself.

We also played a song called "Angels From Appalachia," written by songwriter Kevin T. Hale.  This song was the First Prize Winner of the 2017 Podunk Bluegrass Festival Songwriter Contest, and is a fine number.  Hope you enjoyed it!

And, of course, we included a few songs from recordings received by WHUS in 2017, which included music from Mile Twelve, the Sommers Rosenthal Family Band, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Nothin' Fancy, the Lonesome River Band, Shawn Camp performing on the Mac Wiseman autobiography-in-song recording, Mark Kuykendall, Bobby Hicks & Asheville Bluegrass, the Molly Rose Band, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Hope you were able to tune in on Sunday, but if not, you'll get another chance to listen to the show next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM.

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/10/2017

William Smith Monroe (9/13/1911-9/9/1996)
In short, Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe featured numerous birthday remembrances and tributes, including Bluegrass versions of songs by a couple of Country Music Hall of Famers with September birthdays (Jimmie Rodgers, Roy Acuff), as well as one song each from four well-known Bluegrass performers who celebrate birthdays this week (Paul Adkins, Bill Harrell, James King, Lou Reid).  Country Music Hall of Famer Don Williams -- the "Gentle Giant" -- died on September 8th, and we remembered him with four Bluegrass covers of his songs.  The rest of our playlist was pretty Monroe-centric, as we featured several gospel and non-gospel songs from the great Bill Monroe Song Catalog (born September 13, 1911).

And if all of that wasn't enough, we also
The first Mile Twelve CD will be
officially released in October 2017.
included a tune from the soon-to-be-officially-released recording by New England favorites,
Mile Twelve.  Phew!

Hope you have a fine week!  We'll be looking for you again next Sunday afternoon in our Bluegrass Cafe!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/3/2017

If you were listening to our Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon, you likely heard nearly 30 minutes' worth of songs in honor of Labor Day (although the topic was sometimes about NOT working too hard).  Hope you are able to enjoy your Labor Day holiday...whether you are working, or not!

We remembered the very first multi-day Bluegrass festival which began on September 3, 1965 in Fincastle, Virginia, by playing music from some of the performers featured at that event including the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys.

The rest of the playlist consisted of music randomly pulled from the library with a few 2017 selections thrown in for good measure.  In that latter category, we heard newer music from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Big Country Bluegrass, Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Eddie Adcock, Junior Sisk & Ramblers Choice, Hammertowne, the Kevin Prater Band, the Gibson Brothers, and the Molly Rose Band.

Hope you enjoy your week!  We'll be looking for you next Sunday afternoon for another visit to our Bluegrass Cafe!
