"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/26/2009

Howdy -

This week's playlist included some great new music from some well-established performers, as well as a few tunes that have been stuck in my head at some point throughout the week. The newer material we heard came from the likes of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver ("Lonely Street" on Rounder), Frank Wakefield ("Ownself Blues" from Patuxent Music), and David Davis & the Warrior River Boys ("Two Dimes And A Nickel" on Rebel Records), as well as a CD single from a new group called Brand New Strings, and a bit from the latest solo effort from Rhonda Vincent's long-time bass player, Mickey Harris (his very own label release, "Dog House Blues"). There is some fine new music there, and you will, doubtless, hear plenty more of it in the coming weeks on the ol' radio....

We also let two trainees from the most recent WHUS training class -- James Ward and his mom, Cathy -- test the airwaves for an hour in the middle of Sunday's show. James and Cathy have attended more BG festivals and events in CT and really, New England, than they can probably count, and are well-known by a good portion of the New England BG "crowd." James came in on Sunday well prepared for this radio stint, as he had chosen all of his tunes and brought the CDs to the station ready to go. The Wards will likely continue their on-air training for the next week or so, and who knows? Somewhere down the road, you may hear them doing their own show at WHUS....

Jim & Marti join you for the next two weeks of Bluegrass Cafe, and if my memory serves me correctly, you may be hearing some great guests, too. Tune in to find out, won't you please?

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/19/2009

It was another busy week in the Cafe, no doubt about it.

Sunday's show featured LOTS of David Peterson -- his traditional Bluegrass recordings, his brand-new classic country CD called "Comin' On Strong," and a telephone conversation with the Massachusetts native. Like many musicians these days, Peterson's music and presence can be found on both MySpace and YouTube.

In addition, we welcomed to the studio two members of the most recent WHUS training class, James & Cathy Ward. Be listening in future weeks as the Wards get a bit more on-air experience. Does this mean you may be able to hear more BG programming on the air at WHUS in the future? We'll just have to wait and see....

I'll join you again on the airwaves this coming Sunday, April 26th. There's some terrific new music waiting in the wings, so I hope you'll join me. Future weeks of the show will be special, too, as Jim will talk to Wayne Taylor sometime in May, and we may even have some live music in the studio. Please stay tuned....

David Peterson comin' on the phone line this Sunday, April 19th...

David Peterson -- the fine Massachusetts-born-and-raised singer -- joins us via telephone on this Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe. Although he's perhaps best known as the leader of the super-traditional Bluegrass band, 1946, Dave has also recently released a very fine recording of "real" country music called "Comin' On Strong." You've likely heard us playing tracks from this great recording over the past few weeks.

If you're interested in watching some video from the Nashville release party of "Comin' On Strong" held in late March, visit this YouTube link.

Please join us this Sunday beginning at 4PM for the Bluegrass Cafe -- we'll talk to Dave Peterson about 5:15PM.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 4/12/2009 Easter

Bluegrass Cafe has traditionally used the last half-hour of our three-hour show to feature bluegrass gospel music, and because of the large amount of bluegrass gospel available we only touch on a small portion. Since this Sunday's show was on Easter, I decided to spend the majority of the show (not all) playing bluegrass gospel with a focus on older and rare recordings. Roughly a quarter of the show was new music, a little more if you count releases a year or two back. This is not a regular format for the show, so expect things to return to "normal" when Amy returns next week.

Speaking of rarities, I played both sides (one an original) of an undated Rebel 45-rpm single by a local New England group from several decades back, The Bluegrass Travelers, that featured local banjo legend Bill Hall and guitarist/vocalist Randy Hawkins. I also mined my old vinyl LPs to find some great music not-yet-on-CD by Phyllis Boyens (backed by the Johnson Mountain Boys), The Goins Brothers, Don Stover, Bill Monroe and Friends (the Oak Ridge Boys in this case), Mac Martin, Joe Val, and The Johnson Mountain Boys (why Rounder hasn't released the entire JMB catalog just mystifies me.)

New music included cuts from Kristen Scott Benson, Dailey & Vincent, Joe Mullins, David Peterson (who will be interviewed live next Sunday), Wayne Taylor, Gina Britt Tew, and Ernie Thacker.

Also, we heard cuts from two groups appearing in the area soon: Anne & Pete Sibley who will be appearing at the Salem Barn May 8, and John Reischman and the Jaybirds who will be appearing at East Hartford Community Cultural Center 16 April. Congratulations Anne & Pete for winning the duet competition the previous evening on Prairie Home Companion. Anne & Pete live out West now, but are Connecticut natives!

Thanks for listening! Amy will be with you for the next two weeks making the banjos and fiddles ring. Be sure to listen to Amy's interview with
David Peterson next week.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 4/5/2009

"New" seemed to be the word of the day on Sunday's show.

Over the past few weeks, we've received quite a lot of new music, so it only seemed right to share a good portion of it yesterday. Included in the new mix:
Bobby Osborne & the Rocky Top X-Press ("Bluegrass & Beyond" on Rounder), Lost & Found (Rebel's "Love, Lost & Found"), Johnny Williams ("Last Day At Galax" on Mountain Roads Recordings), Tommy Webb ("Heartland" on Rural Rhythm), the third self-released project by Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers ("Rambler's Call"), and a self-titled, self-released project by a fine new band, Wayne Taylor & Appaloosa (Jim also played a song from this CD last week, I believe). In addition, there was a tune from a tribute to Flatt & Scruggs' long-time fiddler, Paul Warren, from his son (and fellow fiddler) Johnny Warren, and two tunes from Volume 98 of the "Prime Cuts Of Bluegrass" series from great forthcoming projects by David Davis & the Warrior River Boys and GrassTowne.

My second "goal" for this show was to talk a lot less, and play a lot more music. Hopefully, I was able to accomplish that...at least a little bit. Hope you enjoyed something you heard somewhere along the way.

Be sure to join Jim & Marti on Easter Sunday with lots more of the best in Bluegrass. I hope that you'll be sure to tune in on Sunday, April 19th, as well, as we'll feature a conversation with Massachusetts native, David Peterson, as he tells us about his new "real country music" CD, "Comin' On Strong."

Happy Easter!

Amy

Bluegrass Cafe Playlist - 3/29/2009

Hi Folks!

Bluegrass Cafe was a full blown music show this past Sunday since we didn't have to ask you for money. Thank you for being loyal listeners, bluegrass fans, and helping WHUS and Bluegrass Cafe make our Radiothon goal the previous two weekends.

We played some great new music from the likes of Dailey & Vincent; Wayne Taylor & Appaloosa; a group of musicians recording for Cracker Barrel that included Ronnie McCoury, Stuart Duncan, Richard Bailey, and David Grier; and some near-new music from
Balsam Range, Pam Gadd, and Audie Blaylock.

I again dug into my old LP collection and played some rare gems from Bill Lowe, The Southern Mountain Boys, Ron Thomason, The Johnson Mountain Boys, and New England bluegrass pioneer Fred Pike.

Be sure to tune in next Sunday when Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring.

Jim
