In a major change from the norm, the UCONN baseball game ended early giving us close to an extra half-hour of bluegrass instead of a preemption. We'll take it!
Newer music on this program included selections from Nitro Ride, Alex Leach, Feller & Hill, Del McCoury, James King, Don Rigsby, Constant Change, Scott Brannon, Junior Sisk and Joe Mullins, a brand new album from Danny Roberts, a new single from Clinton Gregory, and Rhonda Vincent.
The rarity on this show was both sides of a single "by" Cager Farler and His Southern Mountain Boys which may have actually been Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, and Roy Lee Centers.
The Heritage Corner brought forth bluegrass music performed at the Newport Folk Festival from the period 1959-1966, plus we heard music from The Foot Hill Boys, Buzz Busby, Dave Evans, The Wilson Brothers, and Carl Story.
Lonesome Lester Armistead |
We had a sad but joyous remembrance of Lonesome Lester Armistead by hearing his soaring Os-like harmonies on some tracks from the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band and Leroy Troy. Lester left us May 2nd.
James Alan Shelton |
We also recognized the significant contributions of James Alan Shelton on the cross-picked Shuffler-style of guitar picking by playing many of his recordings. James recently got some bad health news and we are all wishing him all the best.
Amy will be with you next Sunday when the new summer schedule kicks in, and we expect Bluegrass Cafe to hold down the usual spot on Sunday afternoons on WHUS. Tune in for some more great bluegrass!
