"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/11/2014

What a gorgeous Mother's Day!  Here's hoping that all of the mothers celebrating the day in our Bluegrass land were able to enjoy a fine day that was capped off by hearing a favorite song or two (at least!) during our Bluegrass Cafe
My mother, Eleanor Orlomoski, and I paid a visit to Roy Acuff (or, his
mailbox, at least) at Opryland in the mid-1980s.

As you might imagine, the majority of the music featured during today's show -- which also happened to be Commencement Day at UConn -- revolved around the subject of mother.  Easily, the entire show could have featured mother songs, but we certainly included a whole bunch of 'em as the USA officially celebrated Mother's Day for the 100th time.  Fun!  We also shared a couple of songs that featured mothers performing with their children, including two songs from the late Earlene Pike and her mother, Nita, as well as Hazel McGee of White Mountain Bluegrass playing on stage with her son, Herman.  Sure hope all of the mothers (and mother figures) out there were able to enjoy their day!

Songs specifically for or about mothers were not the only ones on the playlist, though.  We shared a bit of newer music from a few different recordings by the Special Consensus, Detour, Darren Nicholson, the Seldom Scene, Bradford Lee Folk & the Bluegrass Playboys, BearTracks, and Feller & Hill.  In addition, there was a little bit of music from some New England performers, including the aforementioned Pike Brothers & Pine Hill Ranchers and White Mountain Bluegrass, as well as Traver Hollow, GrassRoutes, the Case Brothers, ShoreGrass, and the Bear Bridge Band.

With UConn Commencement today, the WHUS Summer Schedule is now in effect.  While the new schedule will soon be posted on our website (www.whus.org), please know that if you're looking to hear Red Rooster Party, you can find it on Saturdays, 3-5PM and James & Cathy Ward's Bluegrass Rules program airs on Tuesday afternoons from 2-4PM.

Have yourselves a wonderful week, and be sure to join Jim in the Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon!

Amy
