"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 5/25/2014

Hard to believe, but the unofficial start of the summer -- and festival season -- is here!  Hooray!

As you can guess, Memorial Day was our major "theme" of Sunday's radio show, and to that end, we shared many songs which tell stories of soldiers who went to war, but never made it home.  Some of these songs were classic recordings from performers including the Osborne Brothers, Red Allen, and the Louvin Brothers, and others were brand-new recordings from Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, as well as the group, American Drive.

Sunday was also the 78th birthday of The Storyteller, Tom T. Hall.  To celebrate, we shared Tom T. singing a couple of his own country music classics -- songs that helped to get him elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.  These days, Tom T. and his wife, Miss Dixie (who also celebrates her birthday this weekend), are major songwriters in the Bluegrass World, so we made sure to play several of their recent compositions that have been recorded by performers including Big Country Bluegrass and the Spinney Brothers, among others.

Newer music made its way onto the playlist today, too, including recent releases from Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, Laurie Lewis (with Tom Rozum & Nina Gerber), the Seldom Scene, the Reunion Band, and the Darrell Webb Band, and even a couple of songs from soon-to-be-released recordings from the Missy Werner Band, as well as the aforementioned songs from American Drive and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.
