"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/13/2015

As one would expect on the 104th birthday of Bill Monroe -- the Father of Bluegrass -- Sunday's radio program was pretty much Monroe-centric.  Bill Monroe's influence continues to be felt nearly twenty years after his passing, and there probably doesn't exist a Bluegrass band who hasn't either recorded or performed a Monroe song at some point during their existence.  Amazing...and as it should be.

Traver Hollow at Winterhawk 1983 (Paul Harvey is on the far right)
Between the Bill Monroe songs, we remembered a wonderful New England Bluegrass musician and songwriter who recently passed away:  Paul Harvey of the Connecticut band, Traver Hollow.  When I first started attending Bluegrass festivals and shows in the early 1980s, Traver Hollow was one of the bands who appeared on just about every show.  They were neatly-dressed, talented, and performed a good combination of Bluegrass standards and original numbers, most of them penned by Paul Harvey.  For those who enjoy trivia, Traver Hollow also happened to be the first very Bluegrass band who appeared on primetime television in Denmark.  How's that for a distinction?  If you remember Traver Hollow from their heyday, or if you just would like to hear a fine, traditional young band, watch this broadcast from the Denmark show from 1987:

There were also a few new songs from recordings recently received at WHUS, including selections from Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, and Flatt Lonesome.  We also observed National Grandparents Day with songs about Grandpa and Grandma from BearTracks, the Seldom Scene, Springfield Exit, and the Gibson Brothers.

Be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, won't you?  Have a good week!
