As I've been trying to do this summer, I did a fill-in this past Thursday morning at WHUS. During these fill-ins, I tend to play a lot of the classic country music that I really like, and this past Thursday was no exception. When playing a song on Thursday from Jim Reeves, I realized that this year is the 50th anniversary of the plane crash that took his life -- July 31, 1964. Jim Reeves was just one month short of celebrating his 41st birthday when he died, and while he wasn't necessarily a big songwriter, he did record a whole lot of music during his relatively brief recording career. Some of those titles have been covered in the Bluegrass World, so we marked the anniversary of the passing of Jim Reeves with 5 Bluegrass covers of songs he'd also recorded, and even included a 1957 classic from Jim Reeves that is probably his most covered in Bluegrass music, "I've Lived A Lot In My Time."
During Thursday's fill-in, I had a question from a Bluegrass Cafe listener asking about the origins of "Shady Grove." I had no answer for her on Thursday morning, and even after doing a little bit of research before Sunday's show, I still didn't have much of an answer. Since the question had been asked, though, it inspired me to find a few different versions of this old folk song that has been recorded hundreds of times over the years.
Summer is a big season for new Bluegrass releases, and we've added bunches of them over the last few weeks. Today's newer tunes came from Missy Werner, the Roland White Band, Rachel Burge & New Dawning, Steve Gulley, Larry Sparks, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, Flatt Lonesome, Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters, the Spinney Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Balsam Range, and a track from the new banjo recording from Patuxent Music called "The Patuxent Banjo Project."
We also shared music from some of the upcoming performers at the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in nearby-to-Storrs, Hebron, CT, next week: August 7-9. The Podunk performers we heard from included the Steeldrivers, Donna Ulisse, and Dave Adkins (with Edgar Loudermilk). See you at Podunk!
Have a great week - and be sure to join Jim for another Bluegrass Cafe next Sunday afternoon, 4-7PM!
