A classic country & BG fill-in, 11/9/2012

Friday morning found me at WHUS for a three-hour fill-in program, and, as always, I kind of look at these fill-ins as an opportunity to play some classic country tunes that haven't been heard on the radio in a while.  It seems a bit lame to call it a "public service" to get those shaggy old honky tonk tunes on the radio, but sometimes, that's what it feels like.  As always, I squeezed in a few BG tunes, too, but primarily, we stuck to the country tunes on Friday morning.  Fun!

Veterans Day happens on Sunday (celebrated on Monday this year, as that's the closest workday to November 11th), so it seemed quite obvious that we really needed to put together some songs that celebrate soldiers.  The challenging part is to find soldier songs that don't involve the soldier dying in battle.  Veterans Day is for celebrating anyone who has served in any of the U.S. armed forces -- not like Memorial Day, in which the primary focus is on soldiers who have died during service.  The Veterans Day songs we played on Friday came from several sources, including Don Reno, the Statler Brothers, BearTracks, the Spinney Brothers, and David Grisman.  Be sure to take a few moments this weekend to remember that Veterans Day is not just another day for pre-Christmas sales -- thanks to all vets!

While we were able to play nearly 60 songs in the 3-hour time period on Friday, we still managed to feature a couple of recordings and performers.  There's really no better way to appreciate a performer than to hear and/or see them perform live, and in the days before smoke machines and dance routines and audio sweetening gizmos, performers didn't have anything behind which they could hide.  Among the live performances we featured were several cuts each from Jim Reeves (recorded at a 1962 concert on a rainy day at Pennsylvania's Sunset Park) and Buck Owens (he played in a White House concert with the Buckaroos in 1968).

If live music from those two Country Music Hall of Famers wasn't enough, we added a full "Health & Happiness" radio show from the one-and-only Hank Williams.  This one just featured Hank with the Drifting Cowboys -- no Miss Audrey.  Studio recordings of Hank are great to listen to and enjoy, but I believe that listening to Hank's live shows makes him come alive.  As long as they keep unearthing these live recordings of Hank's, I'm going to keep on listening.  Hope you will, too...
