"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/12/2012

The Spinney Brothers at Podunk -- 8/4/2012
Surprise!  It was another busy week at the BG Cafe, with most of the "busy-ness" happening behind the scenes.  If you listen to the show online, or have visited our WHUS website (www.whus.org), you probably know that we input our playlists into a computer as the show progresses, allowing the listener to see on their own computers what's playing.  It can be a bit challenging to engineer a radio show while simultaneously updating the computer with playlist info, finding music to play, and answering the phone, as necessary.  This week, there was an additional challenge, as we also had to do a periodical BMI tracking report, and that one was actually handwritten.  Yikes!

BG Hall of Famers Eddie Adcock & Tom Gray recount
stories of BG life "in the day," while Martha Adcock looks on
As Jim did last week in his post-Podunk program last Sunday, we featured a bit of music from some of the performers who entertained at the 17th annual Podunk Bluegrass Festival in Norwich.  It was a great festival (even if the August humidity might have been a bit over-the-top).  If you missed the festival...well, next year you just need to be at Dodd Stadium in Norwich for Podunk.  We played tunes on Sunday from a few Podunk performers, including the Special Consensus, Travers Chandler & Avery County, the Lonesome River Band, Eddie Adcock & Tom Gray, and the Spinney Brothers, as well as a song from the winners of the 2012 Podunk Band Competition:  Three Tall Pines.

Other music from newer releases that we played on Sunday's show came from projects by LRB's Randy Jones, Dailey & Vincent's Jeff Parker, Jimmy Gaudreau & Moondi Klein, Bob Amos, NightflyerBalsam Range, Town MountainChris Brashear, Paul Williams & the Victory Trio, Mickey Boles, and the Boxcars.  There was also a brand-spanking new recording on Mountain Fever Records from Kevin Richardson & Cuttin' Edge, and a song from a forthcoming project by a band that will be called American Drive (currently, 4/5 of the band are known as "The New South," as they'll continue to work with J.D. Crowe until his retirement comes at the end of 2012).

Earlene Pike with dad Earl (left) and uncle Fred, with
Sam Tidwell on bass, brother Gordon Pike with a drum,
and guitar picker, Dave Papuga -- early 1970s
We also took a few minutes today to remember a couple of folks with southern New England ties who are no longer with us.  Bluegrass Pioneer Sam Tidwell would have celebrated his 76th birthday on August 11th, so it seemed only proper to remember Sam with a song or two today.  Another singer no longer with us is Earlene Pike -- a young lady from northeastern CT who died on August 11, 1972, a couple of months before reaching her 19th birthday.  Earlene worked with her family band -- the Pike Brothers & the Pine Hill Ranchers -- and the family released at least three albums for Rebel Records in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Hope you enjoyed something you heard on the radio today, and that you'll be able to join me once again next Sunday for another edition of the BG Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.
