"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 6/17/2012

The challenge in Sunday's edition of the radio show was to squeeze in all of the music that I really wanted to play in just three hours of time.  Yup, that's pretty much the challenge in every edition of the show, but this time around, I wanted to play a bunch of new music, put together a nice song set in tribute to fathers, and celebrate what would have been the 98th birthday of one Lester Raymond Flatt -- all in a mere 180 minutes.

The third Sunday of June is Father's Day in the USA, so it seemed only natural to start the show off with a song from the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe.  Later on, we got to a more extensive set celebrating and/or remembering fathers with music from Jim Mills, Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass, White Mountain Bluegrass, Merl Johnson, Bill Harrell & the Virginians, the Johnson Mountain Boys, and the Gibson Brothers.

We're getting into festival season here in New England (and really, all over the country), so it's not surprising that there's so much new music out there.  From recordings which were recently released -- or from soon-to-be released CDs -- we shared a bunch of great music from the likes of New England's Acoustic Blue, Travers Chandler & Avery County, Audie Blaylock & Redline, Nightflyer, a California band called Loafer's Glory, and Kenny Ingram (from the Earl Scruggs tribute recording from Rounder Records).  The song we included from the new Pinecastle CD by Karl Shiflett & Big Country Show even included a washboard solo by KSBC scrub board player, Dany Bureau.  Dany is from eastern CT, so it's always fun to spotlight one of "our own" on the ol' radio.  If all of that new music wasn't enough, we featured a few other newer selections from projects by the Boxcars, the Grascals, Bill Evans, and the Spinney Brothers.

Ricky Skaggs has called Lester Flatt one of the fathers of BG, and that's probably an apt description.  On June 19th, Lester Raymond Flatt would have turned 98 years old, and so, on Sunday, it was time to pay tribute to his songwriting skills, as many of the songs he wrote -- both gospel and non- -- have become BG standards.  Our choices for music on Sunday included two somewhat different-sounding versions of a song that has become a classic:  "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart," as well as a few other songwriting gems from this BG and Country Music Hall of Famer.

I'm off to the Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival in Tunbridge, VT next weekend, but you can be sure that Jim will have lots more of the Best in BG for your listening pleasure next Sunday afternoon -- join him, won't you?

Enjoy the week!
