Once again, we got an early start (2PM), as Joe the Student DJ is still off for his semester break, so we've been filling his regular 2-4PM Sunday slot with lots more BG. 'Tis quite enjoyable for us, but I'm not really sure how much longer it's going to last. UCONN students begin their classes next week, so there's a possibility that Joe will be back this coming Sunday, but then again...well, we just don't know yet. Stay tuned...(really!)
In the "bonus" hours of the show, we included a whole bunch of songs that were immortalized by the truly legendary Hank Williams. As you know, Hank died on January 1, 1953, but left an amazing impact on the music world in his brief 29 years on earth. As with so many country music greats, Hank's tunes have been recorded by all sorts of Bluegrass performers through the years, so we put a bit of ol' Hank in Sunday's spotlight, playing 15 tunes by him or BG covers of his songs. Truly, we could have played at least 15 more, but we have to save something for another day, right?
(BTW, if you heard me do one of those Tuesday fill-ins I've been doing over the last few weeks, you probably heard a bit of Hank music on December 29th. Yesterday, I didn't completely "recycle" the same tunes I'd played on 12/29 -- just the theme. If you'd like to put a Hank biography on your winter reading list, I made a couple of suggestions in my earlier post).
As for the Bluegrass, there was LOTS of it to share. We played some more from the fine Darin & Brooke Aldridge recording that Jim debuted last week, as well as music from Maine's Gail & Gordon Pike, and a debut CD by a young Canadian musician, Thomas Wywrot. There was also music from forthcoming Rural Rhythm projects by Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, Michael Martin Murphey, and the Crowe Brothers.
