"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/25/2024

Our Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday was a day to celebrate two important banjo innovators who both happened to be born on February 25th -- Bluegrass Hall of Famer Ralph Stanley (February 25, 1927 - June 13, 2016) and Peter Wernick (born February 25, 1946).  To that end, we shared loads of music from both of these performers throughout the course of our three hour visit.  And, since it only happens once every four years, we couldn't forget to celebrate the birthday of mandolin master, Mike Compton (born February 29, 1956).

Veronica "Roni" Stoneman (May 5, 1938 - February 22, 2024) may have been primarily known as one of the amusing cast members of "Hee Haw" for 18 years, but she was much more than that.  In her big, musical family -- The Stonemans -- Roni was the star banjo picker.  In fact, in 1957, she was the first female banjo player to record a song playing Scruggs-style banjo, which earned her the nickname of "First Lady of the Banjo."  Along with her family, Roni was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2021.  For more information on Roni Stoneman, consider reading her 2007 memoir (as told to Ellen Wright) published by the University of Illinois Press:  Pressing On:  The Roni Stoneman Story.

New music was part of the mix on Sunday, as well, with brand new selections from Becky Buller (with Aoife O'Donovan), Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road, Shelton & Williams, and Donna Ulisse.
