Playlist - 8/23/2015 - Carter Stanley, J.D. Crowe

Hi Folks,

Last Sunday's show celebrated birthdays of two giants of bluegrass music:  Carter Stanley (Aug 27, 1925 - Dec 1, 1966) and James Dee "J. D." Crowe (Aug 27, 1937).

Carter Stanley, half of the Stanley Brothers along with his brother Ralph, created a first-generation bluegrass sound evocative of the Clinch Mountain, Virginia, home of their birth.  Many fans today, nearly 50 years after Carter's untimely death, consider him the consummate soulful voice of a bluegrass lead singer.  A prolific songwriter, the songs Carter wrote are part of the bedrock of the genre.

J. D. Crowe is the banjo player most named as an influence after Earl Scruggs.  His early work with Jimmy Martin and Paul Williams followed by The Kentucky Mountain Boys with Red Allen and Doyle Lawson is a textbook on how bluegrass should be played, but his follow-up to those early years was The New South which may have influenced more baby boom pickers and fans than any other group.  The New South had many luminaries over its existence including Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Keith Whitley, Jimmy Gaudreau, and many more.  Their eponymous album, simply known as "Rounder 0044" after the label number, is considered one of the most influential bluegrass albums in history.

We hope you enjoyed the show.  Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring next Sunday.
