"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/8/2013

Another school year has begun at the University of Connecticut, and with it, the WHUS schedule has changed once again.  We're happy to tell you that Bluegrass Cafe will continue in its Sunday slot from 4-7PM, and we're even happier to tell you that Jim Beaver will be returning to host the show on alternating weeks with me, with his first Sunday back happening on September 15th.  Hooray!  We're also pleased to let you know that James Ward and his mom, Cathy Ward, will continue their Bluegrass Rules program for this semester -- their show will air on Thursdays from 3-4PM.  For more information on the rest of the WHUS Fall broadcast schedule, click here.

Happy 102nd to William Smith Monroe!
Sunday's show was a fun one to share some music from the Father of Country Music, Jimmie Rodgers, who was born on September 8, 1897.  Several of Jimmie's blue yodels have been given the Bluegrass treatment over the years, so we picked out just a couple of them to play.  This is also the week to remember and celebrate the Father of Bluegrass Music, Bill Monroe (September 13, 1911-September 9, 1996).  We did that by playing a few of the songs written in tribute to Bill Monroe since his passing, as well as devoting the entire gospel set to the gospel music of Monroe, both performed by him with the Blue Grass Boys, and by other bands, as well.

The first Sunday in September following Labor Day has been dedicated as
Me with the only grandparent I really remember,
my paternal grandmother, Fannie Burgess.
National Grandparents' Day in the United States.  While this is not as big of a holiday as, say, Mother's Day or Father's Day and is not really widely celebrated (if at all), it seemed appropriate to break out a few Bluegrass tunes which have been written over the last several years in celebration of grandmothers and grandfathers.  These heartfelt tributes came to us from BearTracks, the Gibson Brothers, Springfield Exit, and the Spinney Brothers.

We also kept a little time to play some newer Bluegrass music from a few different projects which have not yet been officially released, including the much-talked-about "Bluegrass Album" from country singer, Alan Jackson.  We played one song from that album, as well as a song from the new Rounder CD from the Steep Canyon Rangers, "Tell The Ones I Love."  Other newer music came to us from the Boxcars, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, the Spinney Brothers, Volume Five, Tom Neal, Donna Ulisse, Big Country Bluegrass, Peter Rowan, the Tuttles with A.J. Lee, Marty Raybon & Full Circle, the Expedition Show, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, and Jeff Parker.

Hope you have a great week -- and that you'll be certain to join Jim next Sunday for another edition of Bluegrass Cafe!

Amy
