"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 6/26/2011

Hi Folks,

Marti and I were back after being away for a few weeks and enjoyed bringing the great bluegrass music to the WHUS airwaves.

I was pleased to be able to play a track -- "Brown Mountain Light" -- from Tommy Faile's 1993 tribute to songs of Scotty Wiseman. Folks who grew up within a couple hundred miles of the North Carolina Piedmont between the 1950s and 1980s knew Tommy Faile as a household name because of his daily appearances with Arthur Smith and the Crackerjacks on television. Tommy passed away in 1996, but his smooth baritone voice was true to the end.

New music included songs from the youthful new group Monroeville, the VW B
oys, Larry Cordle, Russell Johnson, Scott Anderson, and Ralph Stanley.

A couple of noteworthy tunes on this show deserve recognition. "Rabbit In The Pea Patch" from Peter Feldmann and the Pea Patch Quintet -- a group consisting of Byron Berline, Dan Crary, and Dennis Caplinger among the notables -- from Peter's album, Grey Cat on the Tennessee Farm, is an excellent tribute to the songs of Uncle Dave Macon. The album is right at home on a bluegrass program.

Another was one of the earliest recordings of Molly O'Day, "Tramp On The Street." Aspiring female vocalists would have a tough time finding a better role model than Molly.

Hope to see you down the road at one of the many bluegrass events this summer.
