"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 2/14/2010

From my end of the microphone, it seemed like Sunday's show went by in a whirlwind. I spent the better part of the weekend in Framingham, MA at the very fine (as always) Joe Val Bluegrass Festival, but arrived back in Storrs with time to spare before Sunday's show. Congratulations to the BBU folks for presenting another great festival, especially when illness and injury didn't make the lineup look quite the same as was planned on paper.

In addition to featuring a bit of music by performers who'd appeared at Joe Val over the weekend (Spinney Brothers, Gibson Brothers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Sierra Hull, Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass), we included one tune from a brand new CD we'd received this week by a Virginia band -- the Cana Ramblers CD is called, "No Expectations." As it was Valentine's Day, we also tried to include a few happy BG love songs -- 'tis not always an easy task to find such songs, but I think we did okay.

We also took a few moments to celebrate the birthdate of another one of those Country Music Hall of Famers whose music has been covered a good bit in the BG world. This time around our honoree was Ernest Tubb, who was born on February 9, 1914 (and died September 6, 1984). ET was not the world's greatest singer, but something he said in an interview from 1957 really seems like a good goal for all musicians: "I sing because I want to sing." You can't ask anything more than that.

In just one month, it will once again be time for Radiothon at WHUS. We're in the process of trying to pull together some fine CDs to offer our listeners (and supporters) as "thank-you gifts," so we hope you'll be sure to help us out, if you can. We know that the economy is still pretty lousy, but for the last two years, you folks have made the "Bluegrass Cafe" the #1 listener-supported music program at WHUS. Of course, we'd like to retain that distinction for another year, too, so we hope you'll consider making a pledge to WHUS on March 14th and/or March 21st. Thanks!

It looks like I'll be with you once again this coming Sunday for another "Bluegrass Cafe." Please consider joining me....

Amy
