"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/6/2009 (plus a fill-in, 8/28/2009)

On occasion, you may hear Jim or I complain that we just didn't have enough time during the show to play all of the music we wanted to play that day. That was definitely the case for me on this Labor Day weekend Sunday, I confess. Lots of great music from some fine performers didn't make it onto this week's playlist, but there's always next time...

We did spend a bit of time on Sunday, though, remembering Charlie Waller (who died August 18, 2004) and playing a few tunes from some different configurations of the Country Gentlemen. Some of the first BG records I ever heard were by the Country Gents (the Waller-Gaudreau-Emerson-Yates era), and it's never difficult for me to find a good reason to play lots of Gentlemen music.

We also paid tribute to the Singing Brakeman, Jimmie Rodgers, who was born on September 8, 1897. No one could ever accuse Jimmie Rodgers of being a BG singer, certainly, as "Bluegrass music" didn't even exist during Rodgers' time. However, you just can't say that Bill Monroe wasn't deeply influenced by Jimmie's music -- the obvious prime example here is the "Muleskinner Blues." And we know that whoever influenced Bill also likely influenced a whole lot more BG singers who followed. We put together a set featuring a few BG renditions of Jimmie Rodgers tunes, and we sure could have played a bunch more, too. (There was a Jimmie Rodgers set in my 8/28 fill-in stint, too).

(By the way, I'm reading a very good biography of Jimmie Rodgers published just this year. It's called
Meeting Jimmie Rodgers : How America's Original Roots Music Hero Changed The Pop Sounds Of A Century by Barry Mazor, and was published by Oxford University Press in April. Sometimes, scholarly biographies can be pretty dry, but this one is very readable. Visit your local library to inquire about borrowing this book).

There was plenty of new music to share on Sunday, too, with great new projects from the North Carolina band, the Grass Cats ("A Good Way To Get The Blues" on New Time Records), songwriter & Sirius Satellite Radio BG host Chris Jones & the Night Drivers ("Cloud Of Dust" on DSM Records), Minnesota's Monroe Crossing ("Heartache & Stone" on their own label), and New England's Southern Rail (their self-released "On The Road From Appomattox"). In addition, we played another tune from the fine new Adam Steffey project on Sugar Hill Records ("One More For The Road").

In addition to the BG Cafe playlist for September 6th, I'm including a playlist from a 3-hour Classic Country/BG fill-in I did at WHUS on August 28th.

Be sure to join Jim & Marti for the next two Sundays of BG Cafe, and I'll be with you again on September 27th & October 4th.
