"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 7/12/2009

Sunday was an absolutely beautiful summer day in eastern CT. I mention this as we've had a spate of really lousy (rainy, cloudy, cool) weather recently, but Sunday was perfect for sitting outside and listening to your radio -- assuming you couldn't be at an actual BG festival, picnic, or some other fun outdoor activity. Hopefully, some of you were able to listen to Sunday's show while you were outside enjoying the beautiful day...

We did a couple of fun things on Sunday's show. First off, we gave away the last of our four one-day passes to the upcoming Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, which happens July 16-19 in Oak Hill, NY. Thanks again to Mary Burdette of Grey Fox for providing these fabulous passes for our listeners. We also gave away the first of our four one-day passes to the be-here-before-we-know-it Podunk Bluegrass Festival in nearby East Hartford. This fourteenth edition of Podunk features some fabulous talent, including Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, the Steep Canyon Rangers, Special Consensus, Rhonda Vincent, the Del McCoury Band, and Dailey & Vincent, among many others. Don't miss it! Jim will have a couple more one-day passes to give away next Sunday, so be sure to tune in. Thanks, too, to Podunk's Roger Moss for these wonderful passes.

New music came this week, too, from two New England bands: Acoustic Blue is mostly from western Massachusetts (their third outing is called "This Is Now") and Anna Mae Mitchell & Rising Tide are from Maine ("Driving Through A Ghost Town" was released in late May). We also included a bit of Austin, Texas-style Bluegrass from the Two High String Band (their own release is called "Hot Texas Bluegrass Burrito.") And we included a track from a demo made by Maine songwriter, Stan Keach. Last week, Jim played Stan's own version of a tune he co-wrote with Billy Thibodeau that has been recorded by (and is doing very well on the BG charts) for Audie Blaylock & Redline -- "Whispering Waters." Who knows what other tunes written by Stan will find their way on future BG recordings?

If all of that new music and giveaways weren't enough for one program, we started our third hour with a telephone guest, Jeanette Williams. Jeanette's own CD called "Thank You For Caring" and her work on the latest project by the Daughters of Bluegrass ("Bluegrass Bouquet") have received some nominations for the 2009 IBMA Awards, and Jeanette was named Female Vocalist of the Year (Traditional) at this year's SPBGMA Awards. Along with her band, Jeanette will make her very first appearance in Connecticut on July 24th when she plays at the Salem Barn for the CT Bluegrass Music Association. For more information on that reservations-only show, click here, and scroll down to July 24th.

Thanks again to everyone who was able to join us for Sunday's show. Be sure to join Jim next Sunday, 7/19, when Guest DJ James Ward makes an appearance. It should be a great time....

Amy
