"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 12/21/2008

As you might expect on the last Cafe before Christmas, the show was heavily-laden with Christmas and seasonal songs in the bluegrass style. Most of the WHUS bluegrass library is still in storage following our move to the Student Union, including all our Christmas music, so what you heard was from our personal collections.

It was a tough weather day, and on such days Marti wisely chooses to not venture forth, so I did the show without her (although on Red Rooster Party just prior to Bluegrass Cafe, I did have Marti on air with us by phone a couple of times).

A Bluegrass Snowstorm Fill-in - 12/19/2008

Connecticut got its first big snowstorm of the season Friday 19 December, and this kept many of the WHUS crew away from the station.

I helped out by filling-in this evening for a little over an hour from just before 6pm to 7 pm, and used the time to play mostly bluegrass with a couple of songs from Jerry Reed and Hank Williams thrown in for good measure.

I hope you enjoyed this surprise programming during this drive-time hour.

A fun fill-in for Amy...

On Tuesday AM, I got to fill in for one of the student DJs at WHUS. While the music I played wasn't strictly BG, I must say that I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

In the early days of radio (think of the time before formats), playing different types of music in the same show was the norm. I won't claim that I went too far from my "comfort zone" in the tunes I selected, but once in a while, it can be quite enjoyable to branch out a bit from the traditional Bluegrass....

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 12/14/2008

Hello all -

Sunday's show started just a few minutes later than usual, as WHUS aired a Women's Hockey game until a bit after 4PM. It was December graduation day at UCONN, too, so finding a parking spot was challenging, to say the least. We prevailed, though, and managed to still bring you some great Bluegrass music (we hope).

Christmas songs were interspersed throughout most of the playlist, and we continued our December giveaway of several great CDs for our listeners. Many thanks to the folks at Rural Rhythm and Rebel for providing the giveaways this time around....

If you didn't get a chance to win a CD this week (or for the last two weeks), please be sure to listen to Jim & Marti in the Cafe next Sunday.

In addition to the Christmas tunes and a couple of requests, there was a bit of new music this week from a fine forthcoming project on Rural Rhythm by Audie Blaylock & Redline, a singer/songwriter from upstate New York, Tim Seabolt, a good new project from California-based Chris Stuart & Backcountry, and a tune from a North Carolina group, the Kickin Grass Band.

While I won't be on the air again at the Bluegrass Cafe until after Christmas, I'm scheduled to do a fill-in at WHUS on Tuesday, December 16th from 10AM-noon. My intent at this point is to play a mix of classic country music as well as the BG. Do join me if you can.

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 12/7/2008

Hi Folks.

The ground turned white on Sunday, and Marti and I were hoping we wouldn't have too much trouble getting to the studio. It actually turned out okay. We only felt like Popsicles.

The cold and snow made a good backdrop for some seasonal music, like Emmylou's "Roses In The Snow" and some original and classic winter and Christmas tunes from Anne & Pete Sibley -- Connecticut natives now making their home out west. We also heard a great Christmas song from Nick Anderson and the Gospel Friends -- an excellent Connecticut band configuration from a couple of years ago.

While not related to the season, we picked a great solo album from our personal archives by Jack Lawrence (Doc Watson's long-time picking partner) and played a couple from that project.

You kept the phones busy, and we love that. In the Christmas spirit, we gave away four more CDs which the Bluegrass Cafe crew will continue doing through Christmas.

We even checked out new WHUS DJ "Phil" during this show, and Phil now has a greater appreciation for the Bluegrass Music as a result of his exposure to the Cafe.

So thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week when Amy will keep the banjos and fiddles ringing.

Sunday's show included a bunch of new music from a good number of Pinecastle performers -- 2008 IBMA Banjo Player of the Year (and new Grascal) Kristin Scott Benson, David Parmley & Continental Divide, Ernie Thacker, and Nothin' Fancy -- as well as the second release from a newish label for 2008 called Mountain Roads Recordings. Their second-ever recording is from a group known as the Elkville String Band. All of these recordings seem top-notch, so you can bet you'll be hearing much more of them in future weeks at the BG Cafe.

Longtime CT Bluegrasser and host of UH Bluegrass on WWUH (University of Hartford), Kevin Lynch is leaving the airwaves and the area early in December. On Sunday afternoon, there was a "going away" party held for Kevin, but since we couldn't be at the party, we opted to play a couple of tunes from Kevin's Traver Hollow days, circa 1986. You'll have one more opportunity to hear Kevin on the air at WWUH this Saturday, 12/6. Check it out if you can, and, of course, best wishes to Kevin in his new endeavors....

As we did last December, our plan for the next few weeks is to give away a good number of CDs to our listeners. This is our way of saying THANKS to you all for supporting the show and listening all year. Hope you'll tune in over the next few weeks, as we may have something just for you....

There are several great BG shows in the area this coming week. We hope you'll take some time from your busy schedule and support the live music of Laurie Lewis & the Right Hands in East Hartford on Thursday, 12/4, as well as two shows by Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass in South Hadley, MA on Friday, 12/5, and in Lexington, MA on Saturday, 12/6 (joined at that show by James King). It's great to attend festivals in the summertime, but there's nothing quite like seeing a performer in a one-on-one type of concert. Excellent!

"Bluegrass Cafe" Playlist - 11/23/2008

Hi Folks,

I had a lot of fun with this show, not only for the music, but because Marti banged her nose a couple of times over the past week (slipping in the hay loft once, and then tripping over a frozen horse water bucket the second time) and we got to make nose jokes.

We had a lot of anniversaries to announce, too. My parents' anniversary was Sunday (59 years!), Marti's birthday was Monday (29 of course), and listeners Meg and Jack had a couple of anniversaries Monday as well -- their wedding, and Meg's birthday. (I admire someone with that kind of planning).

Our focus on the music was just having fun. You might have noticed a new live recording from Earl Scruggs recorded at the Ryman last year, and some great re-releases including a couple of tunes from Tony Trischka recorded with the Johnson Mountain Boys in 1985, and more from Chris Warner's two LPs recently made available on CD.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/16/2008

There are many weeks when we tell you how three hours on the air just seem to fly. This week, time seemed to move even faster, for whatever reason. Still, we managed to squeeze in a few requests, and our two WHUS trainees -- John and Phil -- got to do a bit of announcing and engineering. Such fun!

In the calendar section of the show -- the one where we try to tell you about various shows and events in the area -- I completely forgot to mention a CT show that is happening on Saturday, November 22nd. "Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/2/2008

For the last couple of weeks, I've tried to get in the habit of jotting down ideas for when it's my turn to be on the radio. This week, I had more stuff written down -- song titles and such -- than I got to say and/or play. Oh well. There'll be plenty of time for those things that were missed in future weeks, but more likely, those ideas will be replaced by new ones....

One new thing we tried today was a "then & now" for a couple of performers. We listened to an early song from a group, and followed that with a tune from a recording released in 2008. This time around, it was the Gibson Brothers from 1994 & 2008, as well as Bob & Dan Paisley & the Southern Grass in 1991 & 2008.

Anyhow, we hope you enjoyed what you heard today. It was a mix of old and new, as well as some "local" and regional performers, and a few of your requests, too.
