"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/23/2025

Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was abbreviated on both ends, as the show was bookended by two UConn Basketball broadcasts.  Though the show lasted a grand total of 97 minutes, we still managed to share some fine music during our "Bluegrass Interlude."  Hope you were able to join us for our quick visit.

Looks like our next Sunday visit will be a full-length, three hour show.  Hope so!

Hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving, and we'll invite you to finish up your holiday weekend in the Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.

Thanks for listening!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/16/2025

"Come along and ride this train..."

That's how we spent a good portion of our
Bluegrass Cafe on November 16th.  Many of the songs were all about trains, which remain popular in books, in collectibles, in memory, and, of course, in song.  All aboard!

In addition to our 22 train songs, we also shared some newer Bluegrass selections from several bands, including a duet experience between the Po' Ramblin' Boys and Sister Sadie, and newer music from Mike Mitchell, Pitney Meyer, Appalachian Road Show, Larry Sparks, and more.

Birthdays this week included those of
Tom Adams and Larry Cordle, too.

Thanks, as always, for listening!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 11/2/2025

Our first Bluegrass Cafe for the month of November started with a few leftover songs of Bluegrass ghosts and murders, as Halloween was only two days before our show aired.  We didn't hold that ghostly "theme" for too long, though, as we had plenty more ground to cover during Sunday's radio visit.

Late October and early November Bluegrass birthdays were celebrated, including those of the late Sonny Osborne, as well as another Bluegrass Hall of Fame/banjo picker Alan Munde, and a couple of other fine folks:  Martha Adcock, Allen Mills, and Junior Sisk.

As we do around November 1st every year, we remembered the 87th birthday of ol' Whisperin' Bill Anderson, whose wonderful songwriting has been enjoyed since the great Ray Price recorded Bill's tune, "City Lights" in 1958.  What an amazing career this Grand Ole Opry legend has had, and we shared eight fine Bluegrass covers of some of his classic tunes, as well as some more-recent selections.

There was just a small portion of newer music to share during Sunday's show, most notably a couple of selections from the newest Bluegrass(ish) endeavor of Steve Martin -- a fine duet record he has made with the great Alison Brown called, "Safe, Sensible and Sane"  There was also newer music from Echo Valley, Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Edgar Loudermilk, and Grasstime.

UConn Women's Basketball will be heard during our normal 4-7PM timeslot this coming Sunday, November 9th.  We hope to return with a brand-new Bluegrass Cafe on November 16th.  See you then!

Thanks for listening!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/26/2025

As Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe was the closest one to air before Halloween, we populated the broadcast with lots of songs about Bluegrass ghosts, murders, graveyards, and unexplained happenings.  Happy Halloween!

Our show also included several selections from a brand-new record by Larry Sparks called "Way Back When."  And there was also some new music from Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, Ashby Frank, and Unspoken Tradition.

And, since I got to see the Del McCoury Band live in concert on October 25th in Groton, MA, I couldn't NOT share several songs from this amazing legend in the World of Bluegrass Music.

If you missed the show, you're welcome to check out the archived broadcast for another week or so.  Find the link here:  Bluegrass Cafe Sun Oct 26 with Amy Orlomoski on WHUS Radio

And please don't forget to join me on Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

Thanks for listening!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/19/2025

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we celebrated several October birthdays, the 50th anniversary of a Chicago-based Bluegrass band, and remembered a New England Bluegrass fixture.  Hope you were able to join us for our weekly radio visit.

The October birthdays we celebrated this week included those of Bob Amos, Larry Stephenson, the late Don Parmley, and Eric Gibson.  We also took a few minutes to remember the entertaining Lewis Marshall Jones - better known as "Everybody's Favorite Grandpa," Grandpa Jones.

The Special Consensus is celebrating 50 years as a band, and formally celebrated with a big concert this past Saturday evening, wherein several Special C alumni performed with the current members.  Congratulations to Special C founder Greg Cahill for keeping this band vital and performing for half a century!

Photo borrowed from the Facebook page of
Dave Helman.
We also remembered a fine musician and human being who passed on October 16th:  Alton "Bear" Acker.  Bear led a band in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts for many years that was known as Billings Gap.  During his later performing years, he was a sideman with such bands as Thunder Mountain Bluegrass and Acoustic Blue.  Bear will be missed, but was fondly remembered during our broadcast.  And, as always, big thank you to Dave Shaw for helping provide some of the music we played during this tribute set.

Reminder:  if you would like to go back and listen to the archival broadcast of our Bluegrass Cafe, you have two weeks from the date of the original show's airing.  In the case of Sunday's show, here's the direct link to an archived version of the show:  Bluegrass Cafe Sun Oct 19 with Amy Orlomoski on WHUS Radio

Enjoy the weekend, and we'll look forward visiting you once again on the radio this coming Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

See you then -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/12/2025

Sunday afternoon (October 12th) was a rainy and windy day in eastern Connecticut, and our Bluegrass Cafe reflected the conditions just a little bit.  While the "theme" of the show was mostly just "good music," we pulled out the "Letter of the Week" occasional feature and put a small spotlight on performers whose name (last name or band name) started with the letter "R."  These performers included everyone from Reno & Smiley and Tony Rice and Lou Reid to newer performers like Rrinaco, Red Camel Collective, and Rock Hearts, just to name a few.  It's good to emphasize a letter every now and then, as it sort of forces me to share CDs on our shelves that may get overlooked a bit.  Hope you enjoyed the selections.

There wasn't too much in the way of brand-new music to share, but we did include a couple of selections from three new recordings we received this week, including music from the Burnett Sisters Band, Tidalwave Road, and Pitney Meyer.  There were also recent selections from Shawn Camp, Junior Sisk, Laura Orshaw, Missy Raines & Allegheny, and the Kody Norris Show.

Hope you were able to join us for the program yesterday, but if not, you still have a week or two to listen to the archival broadcast, if you like.  Find it at this link.

Have a great week, and please be sure to join us once again next Sunday afternoon for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 10/5/2025

Before we open up our Bluegrass Cafe for another session on October 12th, here's a quick review of the October 5th show:

We spent a good amount of time celebrating early-to-mid-October birthdays of a good number of Bluegrass folks, including those of Billy Strings, Johnny Williams, Terry Baucom, Ray Deaton, Josh Crowe, Lynn Morris, Barry Berrier, Sammy Shelor, Kent Dowell, and Leigh Gibson.  Songs were shared from all of those performers.

The late Robert Fraker was a wonderful musician and great friend whose birth anniversary was celebrated during the October 5th show.  Though Robert died in May 2017, we remembered him and his October 1st birthday with lots of his songs recorded by his band (the Bear Bridge Band), as well as performed by others, including Valerie Smith & Becky Buller, Chris Brashear & Peter McLaughlin, and the Feinberg Brothers.

And, as we often like to do, we remembered the centennial birth anniversary of a true music legend (and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame):  Marty Robbins (September 26, 1925 - December 8, 1982).  Many songs from the vast catalog of Marty Robbins have been covered over the years in the world of Bluegrass, and we shared several of them that have been recorded by the Gibson Brothers, Danny Paisley & the Southern Grass, Chris Jones & the Night Drivers, the Special Consensus, Jim Hurst, the Johnson Mountain Boys, and the Spinney Brothers.

Hope you'll consider joining me once again on the radio on October 12th!  We'll be there starting at 4PM with another Bluegrass Cafe...

Until then -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/28/2025

During this last Sunday of September, Bluegrass Cafe celebrated the birthdays of two of Bluegrass music's finest who were both born on September 28th:  Ronnie Reno and Laurie Lewis.  What better way to celebrate these folks than to share some of their music?  We did that quite easily.

From time to time, we like to remember certain members of the Country Music Hall of Fame whose influence has been deeply felt by the World of Bluegrass Music.  For today, we celebrated the King of Country Music, Roy Claxton Acuff (September 15, 1903 - November 23, 1992), with several selections from his song catalog performed by Joe Val, the Tennessee Mafia Jug Band, Bear Minimum, Special Consensus, David Peterson & 1946, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.  There was also music from the man, himself, as well as a tribute to Roy Acuff from the Osborne Brothers.

New music played a small part in the show, including selections from Larry Sparks, Shawn Camp, Grasstime, Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountains Boys, and the Grass Daddies.

Thanks for joining us for this week's radio visit.  We'll hope to have you join us once again next Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe.

Have a good week!

Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/21/2025

Since tomorrow -- Monday, September 22nd -- is the first day of Fall, we began Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe with a few "fall" songs.  The rest of the show was filled with new music, classic favorites, and music from two of the newest members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, as well as songs featuring several winners of IBMA Awards.  We also spent a little bit of time belatedly celebrating the birth anniversary of the Father of Bluegrass Music -- Bill Monroe (September 13, 1911 - September 9, 1994).

By all accounts, the IBMA World of Bluegrass (held this past week for the first time in Chattanooga, Tennessee) was a big hit.  One of the highlights of the week is always the IBMA Awards, and for this year, the biggest winners were Michael Cleveland & Jason Carter.  Their first-ever duet record -- simply entitled "Carter & Cleveland" -- may have been fifteen years in the making, but still, it won three big IBMA Awards in 2025, including Song of the Year and Album of the Year.  Conference keynote speaker Billy Strings won the Entertainer of the Year Award once more.  A full list of winners can be found here.

There are now officially three new members of the Bluegrass Hall of FameArnold Shultz, the Bluegrass Cardinals, and Hot Rize.  The latter two bands are no longer working as bands, but reunited for the IBMA Awards ceremony.  How nice to hear them once again.

A bit of new (or newish) music was also part our playlist, with selections included from Ralph Stanley II & the Clinch Mountain Boys, Shawn Camp, Will Clark, the Burnett Sisters Band, Mike Mitchell, Trey Hensley, Becky Buller, and Rrinaco.

Hope you have a good week!

Amy O.
