"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/25/2024

Our last Bluegrass Cafe for the month of August was spent celebrating a couple of Bluegrass Hall of Famer birthdays -- Carter Stanley (August 27, 1925 - December 1, 1966) and J.D. Crowe (August 27, 1937 - December 24, 2021).  We shared lots of music from each of these important Bluegrass legends.

We also belatedly celebrated the August 8th birthday of Country Music Hall of Famer, Webb Pierce.  Though Webb was not a Bluegrass person, lots of his music has been covered in the Bluegrass world, so we included several Bluegrass covers of Webb Pierce classics in our show.

There wasn't a whole lot of brand-new music to share this week, but we did include a song from the new recording by singer/songwriter Troy Engle.  There was also selections from 2024 recordings by the Po' Ramblin' Boys, the Grascals, Andy Statman, Jody Stecher with Mile Twelve, the Del McCoury Band, Authentic Unlimited, and Darin & Brooke Aldridge.

Thanks for joining us on Sunday!  We'll look forward to another Bluegrass Cafe this coming Sunday from 4-7PM.  See you then!

Enjoy the week!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/18/2024

During Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, we spent a good portion of time remembering and sharing the music of the great Bobby Hicks, who died on August 16th at the age of 91.  Bobby Hicks had an incredible career, and while he could play many instruments, he was primarily known as a top-notch fiddler.  From his early days in the 1950s playing with Bill Monroe & His Blue Grass Boys [see Bobby Hicks play the banjo with Bill Monroe circa 1955 here] to his many years working with Ricky Skaggs's band to his pairing with Mark Kuykendall in the 2010s, and, of course, to his position in the Bluegrass Album Band (watch "Cheyenne" here), we shared lots of music featuring this outstanding member of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame.  Rest in peace, Bobby Hicks.

There were a couple of Bluegrass birthdays to remember, as well, so we shared songs by Steve Martin (born August 14, 1945) and the late Audie Blaylock (August 18, 1962 - January 12, 2024).

We remembered the birth anniversary of Country Music Hall of Famer Buck Owens (August 12, 1929 - March 26, 2006).  Many of Buck's classic tunes have been covered in the Bluegrass world, so we included a bunch of them.

And finally, there was a tiny bit of newer music to share, this time from new recordings by the Grascals, the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Jason Carter & Michael Cleveland, Greg Blake & Amanda Cook, Alan Bibey, and Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.

Hope you were able to join us last Sunday afternoon!  We'll look forward to our next visit this Sunday from 4-7PM.  Hope to see you on the radio!

Enjoy the weekend!

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/11/2024

What a fine weekend we had!  The Podunk Bluegrass Festival -- though a bit rainy at times -- ended in an outstanding way with a spot-on set of music from the Del McCoury Band.  At Podunk, we also enjoyed music from High Fidelity, Nick Chandler & Delivered, the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, the Kevin Prater Band, Carley Arrowood, John McEuen & the Circle Band, and several others.  Outstanding!  Congratulations to the hard-working Podunk Board and volunteers on another top-notch festival!  We included music from some of the Podunk performers during our Bluegrass Cafe on Sunday afternoon.  Hope you were able to join us!

As befitting Bluegrass Royalty, we also belatedly celebrated the 97th birth anniversary of the self-appointed King of Bluegrass, Jimmy Martin (August 10, 1927 - May 14, 2005).  To celebrate, we shared lots of his music performed both by him and others throughout the program.

We also celebrated three fine Bluegrass songwriters and performers who all happened to have been born within a few days of each other in 1938:  Paul Craft (August 12, 1938 - October 18, 2014), Jake Landers (August 14, 1938 - February 13, 2018), and Aubrey Holt (August 15, 1938 - October 5, 2017).  August 1938 must have been a big month for Bluegrass legends, as we also remembered banjo great, Ben Eldridge (August 15, 1938 - April 14, 2024).

New music was part of the show, too, as we got mail!  We shared music from brand-spanking-new CDs from the Po' Ramblin' Boys, Rebecca Frazier, and Jody Stecher with Mile Twelve.  There was also a new single from Michael Cleveland & Jason Carter, and selections from 2024 recordings by Junior Sisk, Daniel Grindstaff, and the Travelin' McCourys.

Hope you enjoyed the program, and we'll be sure to look for you on Sunday for another edition of our Bluegrass Cafe!

See you soon -
Amy O.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 8/4/2024

It's nearly time for the annual Podunk Bluegrass Festival, so we made sure to highlight some of the performers during this past Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe. This event is Connecticut's only major Bluegrass festival, and the lineup is filled with top-notch bands such as High Fidelity, the Tennessee Bluegrass Band, the Kevin Prater Band, Carley Arrowood, Nick Chandler & Delivered, the Del McCoury Band, and others.  The weather forecast for this weekend in Goshen, CT doesn't seem super-promising, but no matter -- the music will be great, and we hope to see you at Podunk!  For more information on the festival, visit this link.

One more fabulous performer who will be coming to Podunk this Saturday is the legendary John McEuen (along with his Circle Band).  One of the founding members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John McEuen is quite a character who has a thousand stories to tell.  At Podunk, he will be sharing selections from the iconic Dirt Band record released in 1972:  "Will The Circle Be Unbroken," as well as Dirt Band favorites, and maybe even a song or two from the record he released in April, "The Newman."  We had the privilege of talking to John McEuen on the telephone during Sunday's radio program.  Hope you were able to join us.

We'll be looking for you at Podunk!  If not, though, you'll be able to hear some Bluegrass when our next edition of Bluegrass Cafe takes the airwaves on Sunday afternoon from 4-7PM.

Enjoy the weekend -- and stay dry!  :)
