Playlist - 9/20/2015 - South Carolina Broadcasters

Hi Folks.

This show saw the debut of some new music from Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Bill Emerson and Sweet Dixie, and The South Carolina Broadcasters. We focused a bit on the Broadcasters because of their recent appearance at the Strawberry Park festival, and their upcoming appearance at the 2016 Podunk festival.  Ivy Sheppard, David Sheppard, and Andy Edmonds make up the group that plays their own cross between old time and pre-bluegrass music with unique three-part harmonies more closely related to bluegrass. They are a rising force to be reckoned with having just signed with John Boy & Billy Records for their fifth album.  Their new CD, also available on vinyl LP, is scheduled for release October 13th and can be pre-ordered here.

Other notable recent recordings on this show featured Ruben & Matt and the Truffle Valley Boys (from Italy!), The Earls of Leicester, Becky Buller, Larry Gillis, The Buckstankle Boys, and Amy Gallatin & Stillwaters.

Otherwise, this show was so full of Heritage Corner material that it would take too long to mention them all. We'll just refer you to the playlist, but single out Cecil Surratt, Carl Sauceman, and some very early Lilly Brothers & Don Stover.

We encourage you to attend the Spinney Brothers concert in Canterbury CT next Sunday that will open with Bear Minimum at 2:00pm.  If you can't make it, we will have James & Cathy Ward filling in at Bluegrass Cafe.

"Bluegrass Cafe" playlist - 9/13/2015

As one would expect on the 104th birthday of Bill Monroe -- the Father of Bluegrass -- Sunday's radio program was pretty much Monroe-centric.  Bill Monroe's influence continues to be felt nearly twenty years after his passing, and there probably doesn't exist a Bluegrass band who hasn't either recorded or performed a Monroe song at some point during their existence.  Amazing...and as it should be.

Traver Hollow at Winterhawk 1983 (Paul Harvey is on the far right)
Between the Bill Monroe songs, we remembered a wonderful New England Bluegrass musician and songwriter who recently passed away:  Paul Harvey of the Connecticut band, Traver Hollow.  When I first started attending Bluegrass festivals and shows in the early 1980s, Traver Hollow was one of the bands who appeared on just about every show.  They were neatly-dressed, talented, and performed a good combination of Bluegrass standards and original numbers, most of them penned by Paul Harvey.  For those who enjoy trivia, Traver Hollow also happened to be the first very Bluegrass band who appeared on primetime television in Denmark.  How's that for a distinction?  If you remember Traver Hollow from their heyday, or if you just would like to hear a fine, traditional young band, watch this broadcast from the Denmark show from 1987:

There were also a few new songs from recordings recently received at WHUS, including selections from Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie, and Flatt Lonesome.  We also observed National Grandparents Day with songs about Grandpa and Grandma from BearTracks, the Seldom Scene, Springfield Exit, and the Gibson Brothers.

Be sure to join Jim for next Sunday's Bluegrass Cafe, won't you?  Have a good week!

Playlist - 9/6/2015 - Rick Spinney

Hi Folks.

Sunday's show was mostly classic bluegrass with several more recent numbers included.  The centerpiece of the show was a telephone visit from Rick Spinney of The Spinney Brothers.

The Spinney Brothers will be making an appearance at a concert in Canterbury CT September 27th. We took this opportunity to find out what is going on with the Spinney Brothers, learned a bit about their most recent album which has had a track hit number one on one of the charts, and what it is like to be a traveling musician in the US while living in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Come out and support great live bluegrass music in Eastern Connecticut on the 27th!

From the Heritage Corner, pretty much most of the show applied, but we did have some special rarities in the form of both sides of two 45s -- one of The Brewster Brothers and the other from a daughter of J. E. Mainer, Mary Mainer.

Amy will make the banjos and fiddles ring next week, so be sure to tune in!
